Walt Whitman is one of Americans greatest writers. He revolutionized American poetry as well as how people looked at society (Baym 1310). Whitman wrote to change the world and the views held in it. He views the individual as the top member of society, therefore, he wrote to change the individual conscious of the world in which one lived. Individualism challenges society and allows the individual to be expressive in all areas of life (Individualism). Songs of Myself Part 1 is full of characteristics of individualism and allows the readers to gain insight into Whitman views. Moreover, his disarming direct address to his readers, his use of informal speech, and his charismatic confidence in his own importance expresses individualism to the world (Corley).
Whitman presents himself as the embodiment of American ideals and the prophet of its political salvation in Songs of Myself Part 1(Corley). He uses individualism in a unique way in this poem, by telling the readers what they will assume and he gives them no other choice but to see things from his point of view. Since his point of view is their point of view. Moreover, he tells the readers he is celebrating every part of himself and by the reader assuming what he assumes; they are thereby celebrating their selves. This is Whitman way of celebrating individuality in humanity. The poem holds many traits of individualism one of them being, Whitman telling his readers to celebrate self and one’s differences. Individualism is about learning and growing from one’s own mistakes. Whitman believes like many of his time a person should be responsible for themselves. When he writes,” I harbor for good or bad, I permit to speak at every hazard, Nature without check with original energy” (Baym 1330). He is speaking of going back to nature and allowing one to learn from it. Moreover, he acknowledges by writing this he will face some kind of reprimand. However, he does not falter and continues on to express the need for individualism.
Part I of the poem is use to introduce the readers to what they will hear throughout the poem. Whitman wants them to understand that following one’s own compass is not as wrong as society as a whole perceives it. By him addressing the reader in such manner he sets the stage for the rest of the poem. This approach gives the readers a chance to sing the praises of the individuality and individual ideas. He is thereby lifting up self-discover to the highest point without shame or conceit. Without this opening to the poem the reader would not see the true meaning of the poem. Every word written is to show the power and joy of the individual. Whitman says, “I invite my soul/ my tongue, every atom of my blood” to this poem (Baym 1330). The whole of the poem can therefore be seen as a total and complete tribute to the individual.
Walt Whitman puts his living, breathing body at the center of Songs of Myself Part I (Baym 1330). He wants his readers to feel every prideful moment and every fall back as he does. His readers are able to understand a person is free to be who they are without fear. He doesn’t want people to live outside of society but to being it enlightenment. This poem is Whitman ode to individualism.

@Sweetreading,
I think personalizing it will be more successful than to imply that everybody reacts the same way you do. Just a suggestion.
