I do beg your pardon--that's only true if we survive the Betelgeuse supernova, which will probably take place some time in the next million years. However, we very likely will survive that event.

@Pamela Rosa,
When I think about what has happened to Chicago during the past several years, my eyes won't stop crying. If there's anyone to blame about the decay of the City, it has to be the dam LIBERALs who seem to be in "charge" of things.

This City is finished.

@Pamela Rosa,
The middle classes have moved out of the City, and in many cases, residents have left the State of Illinois for better living conditions.

Chicago may well become the "mother welfare tit" of the US.
Neither middle class whites or blacks are moving into the SouthSide.

People with money want a better environment for their families.

Detroit now wants the Federal Government to bail out their pension plans. Will Chicago go the same way?

Yes...Chicago will beg the Feds to bail out their pension plans. Will Illinois State go the same way? Of course!

there are reasons for concern

http://affordablehousinginstitute.org/blogs/us/wp-content/uploads/chicago_population.jpg

I think the biggest problem for Chicago is that it is in Illinois, one of the most poorly run states in the union. The fact that Milwaukee is a basket case and the lack of investment in transit infrastructure are also probably on most peoples top five list for why Chicago is not thriving.

@hawkeye10,
If you lived there, you'd know what the problems are and you'd also know that the fact that Chicago is in the State of Illinois is not the reason.

I grew up in rockford, which most people now consider to be a suburb of Chicago.

But ok, what is your theory on why Chicago is not thriving?

You don't live there either.

100% that we'll survive it. We're more than far enough away. And the other likely future supernovae in our region are also distant enough to be safe.

There is however a future hypernova that is looking to aim the axis of its gamma ray burst in our general direction. But it's only directed at the southern hemisphere.
