We don't describe a country as having "earned profit", Jane.

To your question, an economy/the economy/the Russian economy just describes 'the economic comings and goings' of a country or a state or province or even a region. It carries within no sense of how good or bad that particular area's economy is.

You're most welcome, Jane.

I have long been confused on that.

A country's single year GDP when measured against other years can certainly be used as a measure of performance. For me to hear the GPD for one year wouldn't tell me much as to that country's performance but for folks that follow that sort of thing it could tell them a lot about performance.

@Loh Jane,
Different ways to ask politely.

May I inquire as to the names of the four grammar books you have?

Could you [please] tell me the names of the four grammar books you have?

I was wondering if you could tell me the names of the four grammar books you have?

Not in what I can envision, Jane. Can you give an example sentence or two illustrating what you mean?
