AFI has posted this year's choices for the finest in film and television (yes, "The Two Towers" is amongst them):

I realize that they get advance screenings and all, but it's still a little disorienting to me to see films lauded which haven't been released yet - both The Two Towers and Gangs of New York.

AFI gets advanced screening along with the AMPAS way ahead of the critics -- it's somewhat the same voting body. However, the Oscar nominations aren't announced until January. The exact date is in the Foreign Film posting in this category. I haven't read it thoroughly enough to determine why the announce before the end of the year. "Chicago" also isn't released but the National Board of Review has given it high kudos so it looks like an exciting Golden Globes and Oscar night. "The Sopranos" and "Six Feet Under" are in compitition this year for the first time (it seems to me that "Six Feet Under" winning the Golden Globes on it's first season and that it's second season was even superior would be an easy prediction for a win at the Golden Globes). The third season of "Six Feet Under" is in the next few months as well as the last season of "The Sopranos." There's still rumours of a Sopranos movie but I haven't found anything on the internet that confirms that as fact.
