Meteor shower???

Another meteor sighted last night...a particularly brilliant one in the northeastern United States. Exciting.

It is being reported in the media as a "meteor shower."

I really isn't...even if pieces of the meteor rained down on the Earth in the form of meteorites...and there is no confirmation that any have.

A meteor shower (or swarm) is actually a term for an event of a number of meteors that appear to radiate from one point in the sky at a particular date each year. The are usually associated with the debris from a passing comet.

I noticed the term was misused when the meteor exploded over Russia earlier this year...and I am wondering why the recent misuse of the term.
