I have a great admiration for Dr. Cornell West.
I am not a Christian as he is, but he is a champion for compassion, which is a quality I admire in anyone.

@dalehileman,
Oh yeah?
Well my hero (Dr. Cornel West) has been in two... yes count them two... of the Matrix movies. And he has 20 University degrees. I win on numbers alone. Wink

Here is a picture of me with your hero.

I was explaining why his calculations on the Universal Constant were so screwed up and how he could correct them.

He was gracious...and said he would credit me when he made his revisions, but I asked him not to do so under any circumstances.

For the record, Dale...he is one of my heroes also.

@Frank Apisa,
Fine! I guess Albert has done one or two things of worth.
But... does he have a hip-hop CD like Dr. Cornel West?
I think not.
Here is the best Al ever did on the music front:

I know you don't like videos (I won't be offended if you don't watch).
It is for comedic effect. Wink

@MattDavis,
Only thing I dislike more than videos offered in threads, Matt...is when the video is a rap video.

But I watched it...and enjoyed it. Thanks.

But I'm sticking with Al as my hero.

The young man at Tiananmin Square that stood up to a tank and died comes to mind. I will think of more later on.

@edgarblythe,
I agree that he was heroic indeed.
There is actually not much evidence that he died.
No one knows who he is, there are reports (rumors) that he is still alive.
Heroic also in his anonymity, if he is still alive.
Heroic still if it cost him his life.

Who are these people? The only names I recognize kind of vaguely are Hugh Jackman and Jim Carrey but I know absolutely nothing whatever about them. Why would they be considered 'heroes'?

Jim Carrey's The Mask. He's gotta be a hero.

@edgarblythe,
Yeah? If I dress up for Halloween by putting on red longjohns and tying a tablecloth around my shoulders for a cape, does that make me a hero as well?

A viral photo of a woman smiling at an English Defence League (EDL) protester in Birmingham was snapped after she stepped in to defend a "fellow Brummie", she has told the BBC.

The image of Saffiyah Khan has been shared thousands of times since it was taken at Saturday's demonstration.

Ms Khan, from Birmingham, said she felt moved to intervene when she saw another woman surrounded by about 25 men.

"I don't like seeing people getting ganged up on in my town," she said.

Ms Khan, who said she was not part of an organised counter-protest, told the BBC she had been "quite surprised" when the photo was retweeted around the world.

She said she had initially been happy "to stay out of the way", but "stepped forward" when another woman shouted "Islamophobe" at members of the EDL who had gathered in Centenary Square.

"A group of 25 quite big-looking EDL lads, they surrounded her," she said.

"She was 360 surrounded... I stepped forward and identified myself as someone who supported her and contradicted them."

After that, Ms Khan said, protestors gathered around her instead, which led to the scene captured by a Press Association photographer.

Ms Khan, who was born in the UK and is half-Pakistani, half-Bosnian, said she "wasn't intimidated in the slightest".

She added: "He put his finger in my face. It was very aggressive. A police officer was there and the man took his finger out of my face. I wouldn't have responded violently."

The picture was shared by, among others, Piers Morgan, who called it "photo of the week", and Birmingham Labour MP Jess Phillips.

The BBC has been unable to reach the EDL for comment.
