Chest pains, hiatal hernia, acid reflux

I don't know if I necessarily have a question, I just want to tell my story and curious to know if others have the same issues as me. About two years ago, I was told I have reflux esophagitis and a hiatal hernia. Yes an endoscopy was performed. I was told to avoid caffeine, carbonated beverages, alcohol, acidic foods, spicy foods, fried foods, chocolate!!!!! What ? Yeah right!!! This is pretty hard to do and I've not committed to it one hundred percent. Lately, the past week I've been having chest pains. And I really notice it several hours after eating a meal. And then of course I freak out and think I'm having a heart attack I tend to be a worry wart about a lot of things. The last time I took my bp it was 130 /100. At first I started freaking out but after I talked with my pharmacist friend, he said it really was t that high and that a hernia can sometimes cause chest pains. And of course I still don't have the best eating habits although I do try. High cholesterol runs in my family and I was on medicine for about three years up until recently when my doc told me to stop taking it got a whilebecause I was experiencing bad leg cramps. I'm also taking hydrocodone because I have an annular tear in a disc in my lower back. I'm such a mess. I also take aspirin and fish oil and anxiety medicine I don't really feel the best pains during the day and while I am at work. I feel it more in the evening. Maybe because its quiet and I'm not busy???? I'm not sure. There are also times that the left side of my chest more like above my breast it like spasms or something. It's weird. So I guess my question is should I call the doctor??? Maybe have my blood work done again. Last time my triglycerides were really high. Am I worrying over nothing????? Please, your comments are welcome!!!! Oh and my user name is supposed to be Coletrain not Coke train

@Coke train,
I do hope you realize I'm going to tell you to contact your doctor.

But also, you are bringing some of this upon yourself by not watching your food. I know it's not easy (I am long-term dieter and there are definitely times that I just want to say to hell with it and grab a slice of pizza and then get a cheesecake for later). But one thing you need to do is start training yourself to associate the chocolate or whatever with the pain that you experience afterwards. You are experiencing consequences from these behaviors and I think you may be mentally separating them. Don't. Put them together and keep telling yourself, if I eat this Snickers bar it is going to mean pain for me later.

@Coke train,
I've recently been going thru every test imaginable to rule out heart or lung problems. I'll try to keep this short, but if you need additional info I would welcome questions by PM. I never ever got heartburn, my major symptom for reflux was a constant cough. It was surgically repaired, went exceptionally well, but 2 months after the 1st repair I caught the bug that everyone seemed to get but it made me cough for 4 weeks, which re-ruptured the hernia. I waited 2 years and had the surgery again. Six years later, I know I have a 2 centimeter hernia but the previous surgeries may have caused another condition. Yesterday I had an upper endoscopy that shows everything great, but when they got to my stomach (I consumed no solid food for 16 hours) food was still being retained in my stomach.

I started back with tests when I started having chest pains. I've done every heart test so far and my heart & lungs are fine. Yet I still get chest pains. I will have a few more tests next week, but apparently my stomach lining has now become a problem, no cancerous lesions are expected but benign lesions that may prevent the stomach from emptying into the place it needs to go for normal elimination.

So, yes hiatal hernia can cause chest pain, I can only eat small amounts because I become satiated so quickly, and it might be hours before I can eat anything else.

You might want to contact me thru PM only because I'm guessing most folks don't find internal digestive operations all that interesting. I can at least let you know what my next step will be according to my crack team of medical professionals. I'm just offering it if you are comfortable, I know when we have similar problems its not particularly interesting to others. Good Luck, ColeTrain, txt me if you want. That should be PM me if you like, it's a complicated health problem, maybe we can help each other.

@glitterbag,
Sorry you're going through all this, Glitterbag.

I think a lot of people are interested in discussion about hiatal hernia and acid reflux problems, and stomach lining problems.

@ossobuco,
You may be right Osso, it's complex and I really wish it wasn't. The only reason I suggested going off line was to avoid someone coming up with an uber simplistic cure (think rubbing clove oil on an onion and burying it in the back yard). There may very well be something fairly simple that might help, but I need to get to the bottom of this stupid stomach crap. At least the battery of every heart and lung function imaginable in March 2013 indicates both heart and lungs are strong. I haven't heard from the original poster, hope he gets the help he needs.

How you doing Osso?
