Grrrrrr - girls so CAN do "sticks" - if by that you mean manual!!!!! I have only driven automatic for 2 years.

Nobody mentions Subaru? I did research here re safety and reliability - and bought a 10 year old Liberty. The first was stolen - but both have been entirely trouble free and a delight to drive.....

The Cherokee was bought with 280,000 miles. The F-350 was bought with 300,000. The Jeep I got a few months ago, free. She bought the K-5 ~2 years ago.

I could probably get about $1500-2000 for the Cherokee (and easily $4000+ for the F-350). "It's a Jeep thing...you wouldn't undertand."

Craven, Slappy makes a good point without actually saying so. Never buy a car without A/C unless you live on the Arctic tundra. This is a classic mistake many first time car buyers make. It makes it almost impossible to sell again except to another first time buyer.

Husker....I'm really not sure if Ford or GM really have huge advantages over each other with those trucks. Both are pretty good. I guess I'd say just compare, and drive both, and see which you get a better feel for.

Amricans in general don't drive sticks very often.

Those Hyundais for $8k new, most likely is a "stripper" model...5-spd, no a/c, and is probably the lowest model, which are the Accents. They pretty much suck.

Went by the dealer on my way to work. Yeah, it's an accent.

If you're finding Sentras in that price range, that's a good car to look for. They're very reliable, but cheaper than Hondas and Toyotas. Another decent car is the Mazda Protege. They're actually pretty fun to drive for an economical sedan, and more reliable in my opinion then Mitsubishi. So I think you should look for Sentras, Proteges, and if you can find a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic(but unlikely).

Thanks, I'll make sure to remember this list. This is exactly what I needed. There are a lot of cars here in the states and this helps me narrow it down.

It's a big help given that I don't know makes and models well.

Husker: I suggest a diesel Econoline Club Wagon. This is the only way to have a 15 passenger van that DOESN'T drink fuel at an astounding rate. We have many at work with gas engines, & none top 10MPG. In 7-ton cutaway buses, we get 12-15MPG with the diesels.

I just bought my car tonight. Ended up ditching my budget because there was nothing decent in that range and got a 2003 Lancer with 5,000 miles for about 12K.

Got royally screwed in the financing (18%) but I'll try to refinance later.

Tomorrow morning I get my liscense and this 'lil page will end.

I'm still pissed that the silver Lancer with sports rims 'n such was sold yesterday. I spend hours wandering dealerships before settling on his newer but less attractive brother.

@Craven de Kere,
So, how is your 2003 Lancer doing? MPG? Maintenance cost? Mileage on the odometer?

KBB gives it 4.4/5 stars.

I have a 2006 Acura TL with less than 50k on it. Had it detailed last month for $200, and it looks like new. Spent $3,300 for a complete maintenance last year, and plan to keep forever. KBB gives it a 9.4/10 stars.
