What's a hollow apartment here?

"The Fulbright ended. We came home, after two years abroad, to boring jobs and American excess. John didn’t like his teaching position. I didn’t like being a grunt at the Palm Beach Post after two years as a managing editor in Budapest. Even our small apartment with the air conditioner unit stuck in the dining-room window felt hollow."

I don't understand the last sentence. Why did the apartment seem hollow?

@Justin Xu,
Hi Justin.

In this context, feeling hollow means empty/meaningless.

Feeling hollow is sometimes used to express emotional depression.

The couple has boring, meaningless, empty jobs. Even their home seems boring, meaningless, empty.

Not necessarily empty in that there is no furniture - can't tell that from the snippet you gave us - it simply feels empty of meaning.

@Justin Xu,
it is not "a hollow apartment" that you're trying to define/translate, it is "a hollow feeling" that is the phrase that needs to be translated.
