"It was 1992, so the Berlin Wall had just come down. The city was rejoicing. Businesses going up. Statues coming down. It was the Wild West. Anything possible. A magnet for hucksters, youngsters, dead-enders, dreamers, anyone who wanted a chance. "
Is "statues coming down" in its literal or figurative meaning here?
I don't know why statues are especially mentioined here.
@Justin Xu,
Just it might be that there were a few Stalin statues or the like but forgive me not Googling, my yardwork suffers
Stalin statues mostly came down quite soon after his death in 1952; the ones that came down from 1989 on were Lenin I believe. Russian names! Confusing huh?
@contrex,
Con, I had assumed in ref to Jus' q, entirely guesswork, that some might actually have been erected in Berlin, making the phrase literal

Indeed it was literal in East Berlin. There were plenty of Lenin statues and plaques etc which came down including one giant statue which was broken up into 129 pieces and buried but I believe the head weighing 3.5 tons may be dug up in spring 2013 for an exhibition of Berlin's buried or forgotten sculptures (e.g. Queen Luisa, Aryan idols and Lenin).
