The subject matter of the conservation qua Mill was English authoritarianism,
whereas we have been discussing close adherence to the Constitution (conservatism),
as distinct from distortion thereof (liberalism).
An orthodox reading of the Constitution,
as advocated by Barry Goldwater and me, cripples expansive domestic jurisdiction
subordinating it to personal freedom, by applying the Bill of Rights.
Conservatism or liberalism r merely measures of variation from
some designated criterion, e.g., a philosophy, or an art style,
or a style of dressing, or varying from any body of rules, or concept.
An exact, precise accountant is conservative
in that he has not varied from, not strayed from
the rules of his profession, whereas a sloppy accountant
strays from those rules, thereby making him a liberal accountant.
A dirty-handed surgeon takes a liberal interpretation
of his profession 's rules of sanitation.
A liberal poker player will allege that he has a flush
with only 4 diamonds, asserting "that 's close enuf" if challenged.
