Is working for an adult website a slight to a resumé?

I need out of my current job. The accountant jumped ship on Friday and I see that as a strong indication for what I already knew: that our company's business model isn't going to work.

So I figure the company will last a few more months and I need to start looking (shoulda been looking for the last few months like the accountant).

I have an offer from an adult website based in San Diego. I want to work in the field I plan to study (IT related) and I currently work in logistics.

I have more skills than I what it looks like on paper, so I was wondering if the fact that it's an adult website might be my in.

My thinking is that the nature of the company might be a downside for their hiring which would be an upside for me being able to get my foot in the door without any education (yet).

Thing is, that might also be a downside for me as well.

Any thoughts? I'm sure "worked for an incest niche porn site" or somesuch isn't great on a resumé, if it comes down to it I'll definitely take the job but do you think it will be an eyesore on my resumé?

Well, there's the catch-22 (happened to me with teaching) -- you need experience to get a good job but you can't get a good job without experience. So this may be a way out of it.

You have a good chunk of time at your current company, though, which is a very good start to your resume, so maybe look around more before you jump at this one.

Unless it would be, like, fun. (Incest? :-?)

I don't know the niche of the site. I don't even know what site at the moment.

If it's something like vivid it might be ok, but if it's like some of the names out there I might not want it on the resumé at all.

If this job is going to sharpen your skills, go for it. You can obviously put something on your resume like, "Adult-only website" rather than "Bestiality and Incest R Us Website"

I say take the job.

I'd look elseware. It's a bit like an actress, once she takes her cloths off, those are the only parts she gets, unless she was a major star to begin with.

Craven- Bottom line, it IS a way to get experience, but I agree with Soz that you really need to look around some more. IMO I think that you are eminently qualified to get something that will look more appropriate on your resume, especially if you later want to work for a "big guns" company!

I also think that Acquiunk has brought up an excellent point.

This is the part that I'm not sure about. I remember very vividly the problems of being "unemployable" (e.g. not being able to eat) and this scares me.

I'd rather assume I have McDonalds qualifications until I can prove otherwise.

Yeah. And I understand what you're saying about IT-related or not.

What sort of a deadline is there on this offer?

If you think things are desperate, you could always take this job while you look for another, and if you have a 1-2 month gap on your resume, so be it.

Depends on the desperation thing, which I don't have a good enough sense of. The accountant part does seem bad.

I start looking in earnest for a job tomorrow. So I'm not sure how desperate I'll be yet.

I just thought of a more important resume question. I'll post it in a new thread.

Craven- I think that you have a lot to offer. There are many firms that would be thrilled to have you. You realize that you would not be getting a professional's pay, but you have the knowledge and experience that most newbie graduates do not have. Because of that, any firm that hires you will be getting a bargain. I think that your experience on Raven's Realm and A2K will stand you in good stead.

In a pinch, if you were forced to look while you were not being paid, there are always jobs that you can take to put food on your table. It may not be easy, but you need to think in the long term. IMO, you have a very bright future in the computer field.

I know lots of IT people that have worked for companies that pushed porn. If you look on their resume you'd see that they worked for "Lisbon Entertainment" or some other equeally unassuming company.

For the most part, no one knows what the company actually did unless they know someone else that worked there. But, unless you are modeling, your resume is going to mention things like the number of servers, server load, uptime rates and the tools you worked with.

I don't know anyone that's ever been hurt by working for one of the porn sites. The bigger embarrassment is when their friends/family ask them what they do for a living. Wink

If you must do the adult site to pay the rent, sobeit. Then when you're looking for your next job you explain that you hadn't realized what a soul deadening experience such a site would be and you have Seen The Light.

A job's a job. It pays the rent. Buys food. It's what we all have to do. As long as you're not enabling someone to hurt someone else, big honkin' what.

There are plenty of ways around the future resume issue. I can help with that if you'd like. I used to make my living on the employment counsellor side of the table, and still help friends out with resumes and other employment stuff on the side. I'm sure there are others around here who could also offer suggestions.

I work in an industry where people sometimes sample two or three jobs in a year, before they pick one to stick to for 18 to 24 months. It's amazing how that pattern can be glossed over with a good functional resume.

I wouldn't worry too much about the fact the company does internet porn. If the name of the company is professional sounding, then you can paint a positive picture when putting it on your resume, and when talking about the job to future employers. You don't have to go into detail too much on anything you don't want to.

If this is a good opportunity to get your foot in a door you feel you're having trouble getting into elswhere, then whey wouldn't you do it? You'll then have the necessary experience to take the next step after that.

I really don't see much to be embarrassed about. Unless, you're the one banging your cousin for only $9.99 a month unlimited use. Then again, for a guy like Gus here, that would be a dream.

Craven

In regard to the resume: I suspect that A2K & Realm is not as neligible as you think. I also think that some potential employers would be very impressed by your vision, drive & skills.... Possibly more impressed than by someone whose completed an IT course but has little experience.
Is it possible to check with an agency that represents people looking for employment in the IT field?
