How well can scarred and damaged cranial nerves heal?

I had surgery to remove a brain cyst that was causing lots of problems. The surgeon drained the cyst and the pressure, but said the 5th cranial nerve was scarred and damaged from the cyst pressure. He said time will tell how well the nerve heals. Any experiences or knowledge on this and how good/long the nerves heal?

@CGrassa,
My understanding is that only peripheral nerves regenerate. I haven't studied this, so don't take it as gospel.
