Looking at the guns of the Connecticut shooting thing, I see a number of .223 rifles that look like they have silencers on them.

Now, maybe they are bull barrels that are thick enough to just look like silencers. But they look more like silencers.

What would be the point of silencing a round as high velocity as a .223? It seems like an ultimately pointless endeavor.

@oralloy,
The point would be to avoid damage to human ears. Similarly the Russian Army is now using dog whistle type silencers on their battle rifles; they get tired of everybody being hard of hearing after their tour in the military. A 223 with a silencer sounds about like a 22 high velocity round, that is, you just hear the sonic crack the bullet.

@gungasnake,

Ah. That makes sense. Thanks.

I just kept thinking that with that supersonic crack they wouldn't be achieving any kind of stealth.

@oralloy,

I run a .30 caliber M14 sound suppressor on my 5.56mm Daewoo AR 100 and it works quite well.

As you can see, there is no mistaking the suppressor for something else.

The suppressor does a few things, it reduces the decibels to a safe level, it eliminates flash, it enhances accuracy
and it makes it almost impossible for others to figure out where the shot came from.

Sub-Sonic rounds make it movie quiet, but the range is greatly reduced.

@oralloy,
One other thing, the sonic crack of bullets is non-directional, you hear it but you'd have no idea where it was coming from.

@H2O MAN,
Do you load ammo for the subsonic stuff?

Not yet because I have a good supply of factory sub sonic from Engel Ballistic Research

@H2O MAN,
Fancier than anything I own and it would definitely meet/exceed the political definition of an assault rifle i.e. it would definitely scare demoKKKrats...

There may be some reason why the manufacturer you list likes 180gr bullets but if I was loading ammo for it I'd at least want to try using heaviest possible i.e. 220 and see what happened, that might cycle the action without you having to do it manually.

@gungasnake,
Their (EBR) 7.62x39 sub sonic uses a 220 gr projectile and it will cycle my AKM action.
The M14 action can be made to cycle sub sonic, but it can no longer fire super sonic rounds safely.

@H2O MAN,
You're saying it can only be adjusted once and irreversably??

You might want to consider a FAL rifle at some point... DSA's latest effort at something to scare demoKKKrats:

Gas pressure on a FAL is adjustable (the little ring at the front of the piston tube).

@gungasnake,

It's reversible, but not very practical.

FALs are nice and that's one of the nicest I've seen, but when it comes to the .308/7.62mm I'm an M14 man.
