So I travel about 40 south of Raleigh last night and dj for a Judicial Bar Holiday party. You would imagine well groomed, educated and well of people would have a clue about social graces but apparently not. Even though it was in my contract, no meal. Went to the bar for a diet coke, 1.00. ONE couple danced to ONE slow song all night, literally. The last hour there 7 people there. After the meeting I started my "dance" set with My Girl (a lot of old folks) and literally before that song was over, the crowd was down to 30 people. Gratuity? Yeah, right. I did the job on the cheap as a favor to help someone out as it was. No good deed goes unpunished,.

Well, it was a work night . . . people would not have stayed late anyway.

I wonder if you mis-read the crowd's music preference. Sounds like a 60's group. Did you ASK the age group that would be there?

Re: no meal. That should not have happened. But I would have grabbed my "contact" there and made sure I had a meal and all the soft drinks I needed.

@blueveinedthrobber,
Who were you doing this favor for? A friend? A relative? A politician who knows your dirty secrets? A homeless man on the street?

Did you have to bring in your own equipment and music? Set up without any help?

As for the no dancing? That's fine by itself. That's more on the groups fault. A hive mindset of wallflowers. Perhaps they shouldn't have even thought about bringing in a DJ if they weren't a dancing crowd.

Whoever it was, if I was you, I'd confront them on these big details. This person who received your favor needs to be shamed. What a jerk. Neutral

@tsarstepan,
my own gear, set up and tear down alone. I don't care about the no dancing part, you're correct they weren't the type. when I play My Girl and then a beach music tune in the South and no one budges, I know they're not going to dance. You know how when you are hearing music, no matter what you're doing, a toe will start to tap subconsciously? Not a moving leg, toe, or head in the entire place.

Well, you said it was a legal group. They just want to talk "shop" anyway. Soft background music would have sufficed.

I have a friend who hosts such a group. They have appetizers, a full bar and don't have any music at all! The lawyers just want to swap stories, etc. the party is from 6 - 1o- p.m. - 100 people.

@blueveinedthrobber,
Thanks for the clarification. Without that, I'd have said that the whole problem was that you were DJ'ing to a

Maybe a group of militant cult members, zombies, or stroke victims?

That maybe the case, but my law firm holiday party I went to this Tuesday, for the most part, most of the people were happy to talk in their personal cliques but one sect hung around the piano tucked away in a corner and started to sing Christmas carols. Quite fun stuff. Clearly our legal group is more festive then that legal group of mannequins.

@PUNKEY,
again, the dancing part wasn't the issue I don't expect to be treated like a rock star but there's a protocol which includes basic courtesies to the entertainment and generally a gratuity. A Jiffy Lube company party would have known that.

At the end of the night the three people left, the organizer and her big boss, came to me to tell me what a great job I did. Oh boy that took care of the fact I'd been 6 hours without eating. Laughing Oh yeah, in addition, I saw a few attorneys asking for go boxes from the staff. Wow.

A religious hermit from the 14th century just coming out of his cave retreat for 20 years of his life would have known that tipping is important.

@tsarstepan,
I recall dancing at law firm holiday parties in the '80s (no DJ; this was the radio as I recall).

But yeah, they should've tipped. And fed. Sheesh.
