@cdipper11,
Sounds like a homework assignment.

My short answer might be:

Modern science is a field of study aimed at predicting and controlling what we call "reality". Successful prediction (also post-diction) and economy of expression (elegance) are major factors of what we call " a satisfactory explanation". The adjective "modern" partially suggests the move away from deterministic or causal explanation to one of mathematical coherence. This consideration leaves us with epistemological and ontological questions concerning the nature of observation, the nature of reality and our access to it, and also draws our attention to the transient nature of scientific paradigms which tend to progressively supercede each other.

A shorter answer is that it's a process that is used to develop our knowledge.

@aspvenom,
... and it leaves us at a bus station in a scary part of town, with only enough fare to get to Dubuque.

True story.

@cdipper11,
It leaves us with the ability to keep 40% of babies from dying, cure deadly diseases, explore other planets with robots and send messages to strangers in a fraction of a second.

@maxdancona,
Strictly speaking that's "technology".

@farmerman,
Your doubts, if ever evidenced by fear can become alleviated, not by knowledge, but by endurance of fear, to know you challenge such fears at the same time as befalling them on yourself, is to perform lesser Bushido.

I suggest you try it.
It takes time, though each argument becomes the lesser the worry over time, until eventually, only the 'fear of absolute reasonability of fear upon the collective', is fear to you at all.

In short that means .. That when any debate is fearful to you, you are under attack, not merely perceiving it. (One must then check ones environment and ones own state of being).

The world can and does scrape a peculiar lens past you on occasion at that point, though that's the truth in all it's lack of fear. One must be careful to recognize then that a climb is required to return to normal alternate modes of recognition which also takes time and patience, its a downhill endurance and an uphill struggle, though it's results should in theory be worth the effort..

So the scientific explanation above, as provided quite aptly by Fresco, could, if people were not afraid, be augmented with this philosophy, which in a sense it is already, though they richochet off what scares them and then find they learn only what they 'like' instead.

I am not really permitted to say any of this, though I find it necessary to point it out on occasion. It seems that systems of world order allow too often a backdoor for the unscrupulous, by disavowing anything remotely as this as true. Hence the term 'sheep' can exist at all.
