@Setanta,
.

It would probably require a human to successfully register if a captcha is required, although there are allegedly programs which can complete captchas. T

There are ways for a bot to handle a captcha one is to hand the captcha over another website that get a lot of traffic such as a porn site that you control or at least have a deal with the webmaster and allow some other human trying to log on to a porn site to solve the capcha in real time for the bot.

@Region Philbis,
I see your future ! ! !

You will receive a visit from two Asian gentlemen, wearing cheap, off-the-rack black suits, clunky shoes and dark sunglasses . . . at night . . . you will trouble us no more!

@ehBeth,

Some forum-type websites require people to be members for some period of time/make a certain number of posts before they can start their own threads/add links. That approach was one of the big upsides of the forums from the Taunton group of companies. The mods commented that it was comparatively easy to manage as they didn't have to deal with much spam - they were able to moderate discussions rather than spend time shovelling spam.
That sounds like an interesting approach. If it works, I'm all for it. Someone needs to do something before "taking out the trash" becomes a full time activity every time I log into A2K. (also the high volume of garbage posts have a tendency to obscure the real posts, so I sometimes miss the good ones).

@rosborne979,
Well yes, but some people join just to ask one specific question. Well anyway, I think that still happens.

@roger,
This was my thought as well. Wouldn't really work for a general q&a forum
