@cicerone imposter,
It is very much IN the city. Practically next to downtown, overlooking Reforma Avenue, c.i.

The thing is it wasn't in the city during Maxi's times. He ordered the Promenade of the Empress (now Reforma) to be built between the city and the palace.

At the Museum of History, inside the Castle, you can see:

The Count of Galvez, builder of the Castle:

Historical objects:

The Constitution:

@fbaezer,
Okay, then, my wife and I "did" visit the palace. Thank you.

Hey, that was in 1963! Gotta give me some credit for my senior moments! Mr. Green

There are also some cultural events at the Castle. I've been to these:

Sleeping Beauty ballet:

Historical dinners:

A talk about history and old style food (I went in 2010, we had Benito Juarez's last supper: the same menu he ate the night before he died)

from the Castle we can walk to the lake (better if it's not a weekend, for the stroll will be infested by "ambulantes", like in the picture):

And we can visit "Casa del Lago", a cultural space by UNAM:

I went to this restaurant once (well, I think it's the same one, known to me as del Lago).

Osso, that's another lake, on the second section of Chapultepec.
We're now visiting the first section.

@fbaezer,
(something's wrong with the site, so I replied myself in order to post)

Next to the lake, we find the zoo. Some people like it, some find it boring.

http://www.chapultepec.org.mx/web2010/chapultepec/1secc/1secc_sitios/imagenes/zoo.jpg

And the Fountain of Nezahualcóyotl, honoring the Poet-Emperor of Texcoco.
As a young child, I thought this fountain was impressive. But I'm a grownup, now:

@fbaezer,
In the First Section of Chapultepec, there are other important museums.
The one I have visited the most is, by far, the Museum of Modern Art. I guess it is the placed where I learned to appreciate art.

@ossobuco,
I'm hoping that the pictures I post can be identified by fbaezer. These were taken in November of 2011. Some are self-explanatory, and several have already been identified. I really love the architecture. The first picture is an archaeological dig near the cathedral.

@fbaezer,
I really like that Coca Cola sign, because we don't have those kind of signs anyplace else in the world - that I have seen. It's unique to Mexico City.

@cicerone imposter,
Interesting.
Those signs are old, 1950s-1960s, most of them. But they survived.
They yell: "I wannabe modern!", and tell: "... but I'm not really modern".

@cicerone imposter,
Other interesting museum at the first (old) section of Chapultepec is Museo Tamayo, with lots of paintings from the master and other exhibits:

@cicerone imposter,
Very near Museo Tamayo, we find perhaps Mexico's most famous museum. The National Anthropology Museum:

The giant statue of Tlaloc (god of water) presides the entrance (the two everpresent buildings you see behind are nick-named "The Cokes")

This is how it looks inside:
