In New York law, what is the difference between probation and parole?

Probation is applied as a sentence for a crime, by the judge. Parole is a release from a prison, with the balance of the sentence being served outside the prison. It is determined by a parole board. The conditions are often similar.

The answer is fairly uniform in the US, and that is not a NY specific answer.
