Identify medieval overlapping circles pattern

The name for this overlapping circular pattern is eluding me, I have searched for several hours and can't find a name or other real information about it. This pattern is used on rugs, tapestries, walls, other old graphics, even the Steelers used parts of it for their logo. Any help is appreciated.

@phoenix--,
Something about it suggests a Moorish or other North African design, but I can't begin to tell you why I think so.

The quilt pattern of four overlapping circles is called "wedding ring". "Flower of life" is the name for the pattern of six overlapping circles (look for the wikipedia article of that name).

@phoenix--,
in quilting it has been called "stained glass" or "cathedral windows" My mother-in-law made one of these and it was beautiful. a lot of work went into the quilt.
