My car, though it claims to have been sold meeting the requirements for the 1984 model year in California, cannot pass the NOX requirements implemented in Smogcheck 2. Problem is, NOX is typically reduced by the use of an EGR (emmission gas return) valve, but my mechanic cannot find one installed on the vehicle.
Should there be one? If not, what other technique might have been used on this engine to reduce NOX (oxides of Nitrogen).
Any help or even a link to a site full of mechanics would be appreciated.
It has got one. If your mechanic can't find it, you need a new mechanic.
Those 'e series engines are the worst thing BMW ever made. They tried to make them efficient by making them burn lean. That's why your having emmision problems. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Actually Adrian, I verified through a local BMW shop that the '84 325e series for the California market had no EGR equipment. So my mechanic was correct. I think you're right about the lean burning though. Thanks for the feedback.
That's quite strange. Australian spec' models do. California has much stricter emmissions reg's than here. Odd.
Hey Adrian,
You were right, all the mech had to do was enrich the mixture and voila, it passed no problem. Just money and time. Pain in the ass is what it was.
Funny. Good luck with it.
