@ehBeth,
I use Kaspersky with no problems, mostly because Set said he had no problems. McAfee used to have the reputation of being difficult to completely remove, though I've never used it myself.

@roger,
Naw, that ain't it, it's all about appearances. It could be the Black Hole of Calcutta microbe-wise, so long as it looks shiny and new.

@roger,
Removing McAfee was a bit like taking apart HAL's brain.
It bleated a number of separate messages to me by way of pop-ups
...."Oh, your computer's not protected!!" .
... "You (sob) still have an active subscription!".
.. and
Are you really, really, really sure you want to remove this software??!??"

I detected just a bit of bitter sarcasm in it's last message.
"You have removed McAfee from your computer. You must restart your computer in order for the changes to your system to take effect." (You dolt)"

@rosborne979,
i've got a mac, and while threats are rare, a year ago i started using intego virus barrier, it's pretty unobtrusive and has warned me twice about potential problems, so it's worth the $30 a year

I've had a house full of Mac's and few Windows and Linux machines for a long time now. The only one that ever actually gets an infection is the Windows machine, and I run Anti-viral software on it.

I've heard rumors of Mac and Linux viruses, but I've never actually seen one.

@rosborne979,
i was lucky with all my windows machines to never get anything serious 9and it wasn't from lack of trying (or at least indifferent surfing)

i had my mac for about 4 years before protecting it, i look at it as insurance, you pay for it and the best case scenario is you never have to use it

I don't mine paying for it.

I have paid versions of all the major AV softwares but couldn't be paid to install them (because the security theater has gotten so out of hand that they themselves are a worse nuisance than the malware they purport to protect you from), but the good news is that Microsoft Security Essentials is head and shoulder above them all and is free:

Except for the whole spending money for nothing and having a useless bit of security theater hogging resources on your computer.

Mac AV software is so pointless right now that I don't know how those who sell it sleep at night. It is like insurance, like tsunami insurance in Kansas.

@Joe Nation,
Mine, which had installed itself without my knowledge, responded without a whimper to Uninstall on Control panel.

perhaps it is giving up?
