Rainsoft ACQ50CT no brine creation/draw

Hi,

I have a 12 year old Rainsoft AQC50CT softener that no longer makes soft water. The problem is that "piston" that opens the brine valve is depressed by apparent tabs on a cylinder that rotates according to the cycle. I say apparent because both tabs on mine are broken off, so the piston never moves thus no brine created, non drawn in.

I've verified that if I press the piston what I expect to happen on cycle 1/4 does happen (fill the tank/suck in brine). I'm in the process of a "manual" regen now where I filled the tank manually and when cycle 4 starts I'll hold the piston down with a stick to draw brine in.

The question I have is short of calling my dealer.. do I have any chance of getting this part?

My family has grown - was my wife and I when we bought it, now it's us and 4 kids. They're all under 5, so they only have the water usage of probably 2 people.. for now - so I suspect that this system is undersized anyway as it flushes just about every other day. I'd like to save the automatic $125 on a service call and just put it toward a Fleck 6700/7000 (or 9100 as I've had it with somebody/something using water in the middle of the night when it's flushing and having crappy water for 3 or 4 days).. but if I could get the part, it might not be something I have to do right now.

Thanks!
Mike

@mbmit,
it probably is undersized at 1/2 cube of resin. As far as the part with the tabs broken off, something caused them to break, usually it's the tab on the outer case that breaks( this tab keeps the injector from moving sideways) and then the injector moves and the tabs on the injector drive gear break off from too much stress. The entire outside case and the injector drive gear probably both need to be replaced. Since they are under warranty, I would call the dealer aand ask about a bigger tank with more resin, and fixing the parts under warranty. The service call may cost a little more, but since it's not an electrical problem, they should be able to fix it in one call and no need for an "upgraded" head. Unless you have the airmaster(uv system on the furnace), r/o and carbon tank in front of the aqc, there is no need for all the extra bells and whistles. Just remember that you electrical portion is out of warranty(10 years) , but the rest of the system has a lifetime warranty. You do have to pay for the service call though, and extra for a bigger tank and more resin.

@mbmit,
The valve can be serviced, but there are just a few people in the country that still work on the old RainSoft systems and none of them are RainSoft dealers.

If you can't find someone locally I suggest upgrading to a new softener with a digital Fleck 2510 control valve and donate the old system.
