purges to long, and water bill is to high ,how do i reset for only one person in the house? its a 2004 gold series

is the water meter moving all the time ?
if yes, bypass the system and see if the meter stops.
If the meter still doesn't stop, then you probably have something else running all the time.
Leaking toilet?
Dripping faucet?
If the meter stops when it's on bypass, then I would say that your seals need replaced.
how long is too long? the typical cycle is 12-16 minutes filling the brine(1/4 gpm) then 2 hours of not running then 5 minutes backwash(1.2gpm), 42 minutes brine draw(.4gpm), then 3 minutes fast rinse 1.2gpm).
With one person in the house it should only "purge" once a week using 40 gallons or less.
