From the previous thread that somehow lost the poll:

Don't ask me why the sound editing of LOTR:ROTK was not nominated as I thought it was extremely well done and better than "Pirates." Who knows? "City of God" may be the dark horse what will win for best adapted screenplay. Original screenplay is really hard to call but "Lost in Translation" looks like it will win.

I notice that there is no category for lighting. Is this considered part of cinematography? The lighting certainly made a critical contribution to the "look" of "Girl with a Pearl Earring", which in my opinion deserves to win the awards for Art Design and Cinematography.

I am really disappointed that Jeff Bridges wasn't nominated for Seabiscuit and Cold Mountain missed out on Best Picture.

That said:

Best Picture: Seabiscuit
Best Actor: Bill Murray (a sentimental favorite; I believe Ben Kingsley did the finest work)
Best Supporting: Tim Robbins
Best Actress: Charlize Theron
Best Supporting: Renee Zellweger
Animated: Finding Nemo
Art: LOTR
Cinematography: Cold Mountain
Costumes: LOTR
Director: Sofia Coppola
Documentary (feature): Fog of War
Visual: LOTR
Writing (adapted): Mystic River
Writing (orig.): Lost in Translation

That list seems to spread it around nicely.

The poll is temporarily in limbo but will be up -- it asks what picture will win and I think it's obvious. LOTR, not just for the final film but the achievement of the trilogy. It will be the first fantasy or sci-fi film to win.

Lighting, Flyboy, is in one of those technical sub-categories which are not a part of the Oscar show except for the quick showing of the pre-show awards during the telecast. You have to keep your eyes out for these segments as they go by fast!

I see "Seabisquit" garnered a vote and I love the film but I don't believe it will win. I'm reading the book right now -- the illustrated version is a really great presentation.

You're likely very close. Although I thought the adaptation of "The Return of the King" to be quite good, most will likely forgive the alterations with a fantasy story and not the actual events in "Seabiscuit." You could be right about "Pirates" garnering the makeup Oscar unless ROTK makes a run like the epic films of past, "Ben Hur" coming to mind. I went back and saw ROTK at a THX certified theater and it was a vast improvement -- I did enjoy it a second time around and did not see why anyone objected to the last twenty minutes of the film devoted to the final chapters in the book. Frodo sailing off the the Grey Havens with Galadriel and Gandalf is an extremely important part of the coda. The Scouring of the Shire being omitted would be a given if I were making the film. In literary terms it works, in cinema it would not work. It may find its way in some form in the Extended Version which they've just concluded filming new scenes for late last year. There are as I've heard been scenes added in the battle sequence at Minas Tirith that will included more of the Ghost Army.

Yes the Ghost Army did make quick work of that battle, didn't they?

As to my predictions, I do feel that Pirates of the Carribean, Seabiscuit, and Cold Mountain are worthy films and and one or more of them will probably be thrown a bone in the technical categories. And I think Sofia Coppola is much more likely to win for her script that her directing, as the Academy will probably think it's too soon to give her a directing Oscar.

We always forget that the nominations are tallied from votes within each field (cinematography voted on by cinematographers) and then the final votes are the entire voting body. That can sometimes shake things up -- I just don't see anything happening with honoring the auspicious undertaking of the LOTR trilogy with an Oscar for the final film.

(And Oscar still needs an "acting ensemble" category which would give LOTR another shot).

13 votes for Oscar? That's all we could muster. My, it is slow on the film boards these days.

Mr. Wizard, Was Sea Biscuit historically accurate?

I've been reading the Hillenbrand book and yes, several historical occurances like the jockey marrying were left out otherwise the could have had a more complicated and much longer movie. I think they did an admirable (sic) job condensing the history into a script. The main events are historically accurate but reading the book is an experience in itself. It's another case of the movie being good as a movie and the book being good as a book but it's difficult to compare the two.

Thanks, Mr. Wizard. It seemed so difficult to accept that so much could happen to all the characters and yet they rose above it. Very inspirational

I agree with most of your predictions except for song -- Annie Lenox's version of "Into the West" is simply to beguiling to be topped. Secondly, I think since Peter Jackson received the Director's Guild and the Golden Globe that there's just no mistaking his accomplisment for the trilogy (which took nearly a decade of his life!) will be honored. Clint will come up with the award in the future -- with the cast he had I don't know if he had to do all that much directing! To direct the ensemble pieces in LOTR and fuse them perfectly into the CGI effects is just plain amazing. Cinematography will be very close between "Master" and LOTR but I'm not sure that "The Last Samurai" for its depiction of historic Japan couldn't move in there. They really need an acting ensemble Oscar and LOTR would chalk up another award this year for that alone. I think that's why there were no actor nominations despite the fact that the voters on IMDb gave Best Supporting to Sean Astin.

I voted for LOTR because, from everything I've read, I think it's going to win. But my vote should have an asterisk next to it, because LOTR is the only one of the nominated pictures I haven't seen. If the question had instead been, "Which of the nominated pictures do you think should win?", my vote would have gone to Mystic River, with Lost in Translation a close second.

Thought that I had forgotten that. Haven't.

Sorry, Mr. Wizard. A brief interlude.

No suprises. Nothing outrageous. Not even an outrageous outfit. Is there anything anyone can do to stop those laundry lists of thank yous?

Well, wait. I guess it was kind of a surprise that Sean Penn got a standing O.
