Do you agree with Obama's decision to start killing more people? Then why do you support him?

@ehBeth,
That's a total contradiction to what I personally experienced in Vietnam on my two visits to that country. I have also talked to others who have visited Vietnam, and they had the same experience as I did. In many of the businesses we frequented, many of the staff folded their hands in front of them and bowed to us. I accepted that as thank you for being our customer.

@ossobuco,
To piggy-back on what I've already said about "children hating us." That's a funny ideal to keep; we bombed the **** out of Japan and Germany that killed thousands of innocents and destroyed their cities, and they're now some of our best allies.

So, like, if that happened to you, you would be all copesthetic when the new folks showed up?

Bombed children do not like it, whatever country.

No, but they're not the only ones we have interacted with during our journey in that country.

@ehBeth,
Appreciation for business is universal - most times.

That also builds good will.

But that's not really the point, is it? Whether we're talking about Vietnam or Germany or France or Canada,in most cases the U.S. tourist is warmy welcomed mainly because he/she brings U.S.$$$. He isn't welcomed just because he's American. The point that c.i. is making -- a valid one, I believe -- is that there is no special animosity being shown towards Americans as Americans because of the Vietnamese conflict of the '60s-'70s. Germans don't particularly hate us either. Nor do the Japanese. That's the point, not whether money is the great motivator.

@Lustig Andrei,
Here's a first person story about how Americans are treated by the Vietnamese - which I agree with.

http://travelhappy.info/vietnam/how-are-american-tourists-treated-in-vietnam/

Let me add this one last perspective about people from around the world.
I have traveled to over 170 countries, and have been treated well by almost 100% of the people I have met. Most people want the same things everybody else wants; a good future for their children. There are more similarities than differences; most people like meeting people from other countries. That's the reason many on this planet learn more than one language; to be able to communicate with people outside their own culture.

When I visited Central Asia some years ago, in predominately Muslim countries, children would approach our tour group to talk with us. Not only to practice their English, but to meet people from other countries. They were adorable, and I still remember those experiences long past my visit there. I'm sure they have good memories of those contacts too.

It's how people are treated today that counts; many know that what our government does is beyond any individual citizen to influence.

I really don't understand what you mean by "don't goody two shoes me." I'm trying to explain from my personal perspective the issues under discussion. If you don't like that, please Ignore me.
