I think I held a key down too long. Now in a chat room when I press a key I get the "capital" of it. ! instead of 1. Also my keyboard has "Num Lock" lit up.

Numlock is lit up because your numbers keypad is turned on. That's typically the default for most computers.

It sounds like you're suffering from 'StickyKeys' To turn it off press SHIFT five times.

Yes, you are right. your num lock is lit up but there is "stick key"activated by you when you hold the shift key for a time period. You can overcome from this problem by pressing the shift key for a short time. A pop up will appeared. Click on cancel button.
