PLEASE help me get rid of Offeroptimizer spyware!

Reply Fri 16 Jan, 2004 05:38 pm
Hi.

I have been trying for weeks to get rid of the offeroptimizer spyware. I have done the following:

-run Adware
-run Spybot
-checked for viruses
-deleted BookedSpace and xads.offeroptimizer from registry
-added offeroptimizer to my restricted sites list but it still pops up

The only way I stay same is by blocking the darn pop-ups using 2 different pop-up blockers. But the blockers block required pop-ups.

Here is the HTML code from the pop-up:

<HTML><TITLE> --- Microsoft Internet Explorer </TITLE>
<BODY>

<script language='javascript'>
var expires = new Date();
expires.setTime (expires.getTime() + (24 * 60 * 60 * 30 * 1000));
expire = expires.toGMTString();
document.cookie = 'js=1; expires='+expire+'; path=/; domain=.offeroptimizer.com;';
</script>

<META HTTP-EQUIV=Refresh CONTENT='1; URL=http://xlime.offeroptimizer.com/close.html'>

</BODY></HTML>

Can someone please suggest what I should do about this problem. I run Win XP. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks

You can try this:

Open the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and add two lines:

127.0.0.1 xlime.offeroptimizer.com
127.0.0.1 offeroptimizer.com

According to this page,

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/articles/20031114.asp

that should block access to that website.

I'm not too sure about the syntax for the hosts file (someone correct me if it must be written otherwise?), but that should be ok, unless it doesn't allow you to have two of the same ips.

If that does not work, try downloading Hijackthis from

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

That may catch the problem. But it will give you a confusing looking output. If the first solution does not work, post the output of the hijackthis program, and I may be able to tell you what you need to get rid of.

d/l HijackThis from
http://www.merijn.org/files/HijackThis.exe

to a folder of your choice......doubleclick to open."Scan"...then "Save Log"...when it opens in notepad.......copy (edit..select all..copy) & paste (CTRL-V) the log into your next reply.

Wow ... a buncha yuckwear there. Download and run Smart Killer and CW Shredder. Then download and install SpyBot S&D. Open the program and have it search for and install its updates, then set it to "Immunize", run it, and let it fix whatever it finds. It will retain an "Undo" log, so if it breaks something, you can fix it. Then download, install, update, and run Ad Aware, also letting it fix whatever it finds. Reboot, and run Spybot and AdAware again. If either finds anything, "fix " it with whichever app found it. Reboot. With no other browser windows open, run HijackThis again, and post your new log.

One problem I discovered is that Kazaa no longer functions. So, should I recover something? It says that certain stuff that is needed for Kazaa to function are not there. Please reinstall. What do I do?

You've got some work ahead of you. First, Backup Your Registry

Now, Uninstall KaZaa and, after you've done all the following, see HERE[/i] for an alternative spyware-free version of KaZaa, but bear in mind that you'll still be exposing yourself to reinfection if you insist on sharing files with unknown users. If you really insist, you can just go ahead and reinstall KaZaa, but if you do, you're totally wide open to all the crap it brings with itself, and all the crap that uses that crap to weasel its way onto your machine.

Now, go to Add/Remove programs, and get rid of Twaintech, if its there. Here are TwainTech's own uninstall instructions:
Quote:

If you want to uninstall, you can do so easily through the add/remove function in your control panel. You can access your control panel by going to:

1. Start (typically, the button in the bottom left of your screen)
2. Choose SETTINGS
3. Choose CONTROL PANEL
4. Choose ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS
5. Select twain-tech
6. Click on ADD/REMOVE

Of course we encourage you to leave it on so that you can benefit from the occasional offers that it shows you. If you need more information, or experience any technical problems, please contact us at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.

In the absence of an entry in ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS please use on of the following methods:

For Windows98 and WindowsXP users:

a) To permanently disable the software click "Start" and then "Run" and type the following command which unregisters the software: regsvr32 c:\windows\twaintec.dll "

b) To completely remove the software: reboot and then Find and Delete the file mxtarget.dll.

For Windows2000, WindowsME and WindowsNT users:

a) To permanently disable the software click "Start" and then "Run" and type the following command which unregisters the software: "regsvr32 c:\winnt\twaintec.dll "

b) To completely remove the software: reboot and then Find and Delete the file twaintec.dll.

Here's an alternate method:

Start > Run (The Run dialog will appear.) Type "regedit" (without the quotes)> click OK. (The registry editor will open.)
1) Use F3 to Find, and if found, Delete 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Classes \ CLSID \ {000020DD-C72E-4113-AF77-DD56626C6C42}', if it exists.
2) Delete 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Browser Helper Objects \ {000020DD-C72E-4113-AF77-DD56626C6C42}', if it exists.
3) Exit the registry editor.
4) Reboot.
5) Start Windows Explorer, then find and delete (if itthere):
%WinDir%\twaintec.dll
Note: %WinDir% is a variable; by default, this is C:\Windows (Windows 95/98/Me/XP) or C:\WINNT (Windows NT/2000).
6) Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
7) In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options.
Click the Programs tab -> Reset Web Settings. You can go back later and recustomize this to your personal preferences if you want to, but for now settle for the defaults.
8) Reboot.

Then run HiJackThis again, and if it finds them, have it fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [P2P Networking] C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\P2P

Empty your browser cache and delete your cookies and your off-line contents files. Download and install Internet Explorer6 SP1, or, alternately, order the CD from M$ as shown on that page (CD is free, but there is a small shipping charge)

Update (or get) whatever AntiVirus and Firewall you prefer, and configure both for Start With Windows, Autorun and AutoUpdate, if possible.

Once all that's done, and before you reinstall anything else, particularly KaZaa, or do ANY browsing, update and do thorough runs of SpyBot and AdAware, letting them fix whatever they find, then reboot. Run HiJackThis again, making sure no other browser windows are open while its running. That should show things cleaned up pretty well. Post your new log here, if you want to, and somebody'll look it over for you.

Oh yea, there's some error that comes up when I try to install Internet Explorer 6 SP1. It has some kind of certificate error, and then it quits after a few moments downloading.

"The Microsoft digital signature affirms that software has been tested with Windows and that the software has not been altered since it was tested.
The softwre you are about to install does not contain a Microsoft digital signature. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this software works correctly with Windows.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
If you want to search for Microsoft digitally signed software, visit the Windows Update Web site at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to see if one is available."

This popup message comes up when I run the installer.
