mostly christian CDs and a radio show that a friend of my hosts called Urban DRAMA (where God is the biggie biggie bomb!)

Trinity 5:7
Nicole Mullen
Out of Eden (Different Now...go to a music site and check out this track. I think you'll like it)
Gospel Gangtas
Mary Mary
Kirk Franklin
Fred Hammond...

I could go on and on and on...

I am into the contemporary generally speaking, but sometimes traditional gets me all teary-eyed...

Husker, I don't know many christian musician or the music they play. I listen to an amazing, unique station on the net, called CKUA. I've listed it in the portal page. They play a wonderful mix of music from all round the world, with speciality programs in Jazz, Blues, Celtic, Bluegrass, Country, Swing, Classical, World, Folk, R&B and a few university level history of music shows and others...
I have learned so much about music/ians and I would love it if you gave it a listen. I'm sure you would enjoy it.

Definitely prefer the more traditional gospel music. The Swan Silvertones, Five Blind Boys, Dixie Hummingbirds, good stuff.

eoe, It's odd but I never really thought of gospel and 'christian music' as being in the same vein. Obviously gospel is christian, but I find the two types of music to be vastly different.
I love the Blind Boys of Alabama, I saw them last christmas, they were fantastic, inspirational.
My all time favourite is Mahalia Jackson, I love to listen to her sing. I've become a big fan of Ruthie Foster, she performs more as a blues singer from Texas, but her roots are firmly based in gospel tradition. I really like Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir and Sweet Honey and the Rock.
Do you know of any of these groups?

I usually prefer contemporary.

Switchfoot, Matt Wertz (who has been my favorite for a good while). Caedmon's Call, Jars of Clay, Beautiful Feet... etc.

But my overall absolute favorite type of music is more along the lines of chamber orchestras and choirs. (I'm not sure if they are always Christian or not since they are singing in other languages like Latin and such)

The Estonian Philharmonic's choir is amazing. Words cannot describe how beautiful.....

I'm not a Christian, but American "Black" Gospel choirs and the European classical compositions move me greatly. "Contemp". christian music sounds like elevator music to me like alot of current pop and country music these days. I also dig Gregorian Chants and music from the Russian and Slavic churches.

Check this out. Aretha Franklin went back to her roots some years ago and recorded a live double album with her father, the Rev. C. L. Franklin. It's title is 'Amazing Grace.' I believe one of the choirs that backed her was Milton Brunson's choir out of L. A., along with her fathers'choir out of Detroit. Any fans of traditional gospel who have not witnessed this recording, or any fans of Aretha period, get you hands on it. Classic.

That's the stuff I'm talking about! Check this out too, everyone. The movie "Say Amen Somebody". It's been a while since I've seen it but there is a performance of Take My Hand, Precious Lord by Thomas A. Dorsey (the composer of the song, I believe,) that transcends any other I've ever heard. Moving.

This film is a must see for lovers of Christ and Christian music! (And for regular heathen music lovers, too!)

Ceili, I 've definitely heard of Sweet Honey in the Rock but I've never seen them perform.

Oops! I hate to pass out wrong information. Aretha Franklin recorded Amazing Grace with the Rev. James Cleveland and his big choir out of L. A.. (Milton Brunson was a minister out of Chicago.)

hey, i went over to soul survivor (christian camp thingy) last summer and (although im not christian so im not sure how much right i have to comment) i dont really see the difference between christian contemporary 'pop' music and normal mainstream pop etc...

both camps are basically singing about what they think/feel about certain things...although generally the christian groups bang on about god a lot more

if ur looking for something which has a truly different genre to everything else thats around its gotta be traditional, or gospel all the way

trixabell, the 'banging on about God a lot more' is what makes it christian music, but you're right about it having the same feel as contemp pop music some of it - it's so the younger generations of christians will want to listen to IT rather than the wordly lyrics that are most commonly found in non-christian comporary music. Point: I will have my daughters listening to "My Body" - which is a song explaining the the body is the Lord's temple, and the bible speaks agains fornication, therefore I'm not having sex until I'm married, but I'll NOT have them listening to Kellis, singing about her milkshake bringing all the boys into the yard 'cause it's better than someone elses...

Husker, I listen to some Christian music. There is a song I heard that has lyrics that go, "there is power in the name, there is power in the blood , there is power in the name of Jesus," Question and it repeats and it is alto. Does anyone know the song, I would love to download it. I am going to go to imesh and check out some of the christian songs mentioned. Thanks.

Rauch - like this one?
THERE'S POWER IN THE BLOOD

Would you free from your burden of sin
There's power in the blood -
Power in the blood.
Would you o'er evil the victory win
There's wonderful power in the blood

Chorus:
There is power, power wonder working power -
In the blood of the Lamb.
There is power, power, wonder working power -
In the precious blood of the Lamb.

Would you be free from your passion & pride
There's power in the blood, power in the blood
Come for a cleansing to calvary's tide
There's wonderful power in the blood
Chorus
Would you do service for Jesus your King
There's power in the blood - power in the blood.
Would you live daily His praises to sing
There's wonderful power in the blood.
Chorus

the best argument for Christianity continues to be Gregorian Chants.

I grew up singing in the choir. I love choral music. It sends shivers down my spine. I'd love to hear Handles messiah with full orchestra and choir. Classical and ancient melodies are so beautiful.
Do christian radio stations play all these types of music?
