I did a wedding last night at a local restaurant. Since last time I did a wedding there they decided to put in a house sound system so as not to bleed over into the main dining room which I get. It was a home amp and two JBL 12" speakers with the limiter set so it wouldn't play over 83 decibels. I'm sure for dinner/cocktail ambient music it's fine, but these were 30 something young professionals who wanted to dance to current club music and 90's Dance stuff. TOTALLY inadequate. There were about 80 people and their ambient talk drowned out the music. I couldn't hear anything, almost literally, and when I would mix, I had to just guess and hope. I told them to expect to start getting a LOT of complaints from customers and dj's if they didn't beef up their system. i told them in a polite and non confrontational manner, but I don't believe they wanted to hear it. I won't do another event there. I can't have my reputation sullied by their shitty sound system. The guests don't know the situation, all they know is that the dj sounded like ****. Fortunately the bride and groom were very happy , understood what was up and were gracious. It helps that they were generous with the gratuity as well . Mr. Green

PS the venue won't allow any ambient speakers or anything to help the sound. Idiots.

@blueveinedthrobber,
Wow. That is a bummer. Something like that could really put a wet blanket over a party.

I think I would send out a carefully worded notice to all the area event planners urging them to think twice about using this venue.

Totally the wrong place for your venue.
Unless it took place in a very private room, I would not have even tried to have dance music in a restaurant.

O well, your customers were happy - and you learned a lesson.

@PUNKEY,
I didn't need to learn a lesson. I'll set up in a privy if the check clears the bank. Do you think I play The Electric Slide, Lil Wayne and Swedish House Mafia all in one night because I'm a fan of deathless art or because it's how I make my living? Laughing

@boomerang,
Can't do that...then I get a reputation as a whiner. Raleigh isn't Mayberry but it's not New York either, and word gets around. If I get a request for a reception there I'll farm it out to one of my subs who is willing, armed with the knowledge of the house system, to do it for the money or I'll politely decline it.
