Is there a way to report spam on my Gmail account to Google or otherwise block it?

@gollum,
Yes. Right on the top is a button labeled "Spam". You push this button and it will remove the message from you inbox and change it's rules about what you consider spam.

@maxdancona,
I do that with Gmail all the time and it doesn't stop things from happening. Mainly because it puts it into a spam folder and then you STILL have to delete it from there. I don't think Gmail administrators do a bloody thing about stopping the constant spam itself. I HAVE filters and all they do is compartmentalize spam which has to be removed and deleted. The flow keeps on coming. Penis enlargement ads and pharmaceutical ads flood the mail and Gmail doesn't stop it.

I have no idea if there's a different procedure. Perhaps there's someone else here that does.

@Ragman,
Be careful what you wish for. What you are asking for is software that will delete email for you before you have read it. Do you really want this?

As a Software Engineer, it seems to me that a "spam folder" is the only reasonable design. Spam filtering software is pretty good, but not perfect. There is always a chance that your friend Virginia will mistype a couple of letter in her name that will trigger a spam filter rule meaning you will never see her email.

A spam folder means that when Paul Viagran calls you to ask why you haven't responded to his emails, you can check to find out what happened. I check my spam folder every couple of weeks, it takes a couple of minutes and once in a while there is something in there that I want to read.

Automatically deleting your email seems like a fantastically bad thing, don't you agree?

No you don't have to do anything. Please read their own label:

[M]essages that have been in Spam more than 30 days will be automatically deleted

Once its in the spam folder, it's quarantined. You do realize that this is cloud computing email and the spam folder ISN'T on your harddrive, right? Unless you foolishly go for that obsolete practice of pop mail which actually defeats the purpose of having email that's accessible and secured on online servers.

And you do realize that there are hundreds and thousands of DIFFERENT sources of these spams. Each with different email addresses right? It kind of shows your lack of understanding about email and spam.

I don't have any problem with spam. In fact, all penis enlargement spam (etc...) ends up in my spam folder without me doing anything. That's the reason the spam folder exists. To quarantine those who keep changing their email addresses to send this junk.

I bet you open some or everyone of these penis enlargement spam ads just for a lark/a laugh (like it's 1995 or something) which in turn defeats the quarantine job that Gmail is trying for. Gmail keeps seeing you open these emails and is temporarily confused about your intentions. If this is the case, then stop it.

I have had two main Gmail accounts for around 9 or 10 years each. I can count the time a spam email has landed in my Inbox on one hand and have a finger or two left over. No hyperbole involved.

@maxdancona,
As a former computer professional myself, I certainly understand these sort of nuances. The fact is these spam prevent tools on Gmail are a failure. Either I've not explained myself well or you've misunderstood me. I don't want an auto-delete feature for spam. What I want is (and the user) is to prevent the same spam messages that always occur on gmail from occuring. If I use the filters that are built in and choose to filter phrases like 'penis enlargement', sex, and/or drugs (Viagra, cialis etc) - no matter what is programmed in we still get flooded.

Anyone else have constructive suggestions?

@tsarstepan,
I'm aware of all that you mentioned. I never oopen any of the illicit or penis enhancement ads, etc. Your attempt help is of no help. Thanks anyway.

Simply, what I want is for Gmail to filter these damned spammer ads themselves. The fact that I'm forced to do it is an annoyance. Funny thing is how on Yahoo, mail I enver have that problem. Wonder why that is? Perhaps because Yahoo does a better job at policing the offenders.

@Ragman,
I have the opposite experience with Yahoo. I've had a Yahoo account of one or another since 1995. And they still have more spam mail fall into my Inbox then any other email account I've owned other then my one Hotmail account.

@Ragman,
Maybe I am not clear on what you are asking for.

Gmail could decide to simply not deliver email that it decides are spam. This is the same as "auto-delete", i.e. the result is that there will be email that was sent to your address that you will not receive in any form.

Is this what you want or not?

I don't believe that anyone does this including Yahoo. The risk that they might make a mistake meaning that you don't receive an email that you wanted is too great.

I don't have this problem with gmail, it may have been that you happened to give your gmail email address to the wrong person who put it on some spammer's list.

@maxdancona,
You're correct Max. There are errors called false positives. Emails that the spam filter accidentally perceives as spam but aren't.

An auto-delete feature would have the spam filter/spam program delete important email documents that might be misconstrued as spam but actually aren't.

I don't have this problem with gmail either. A very, very minimal amount of spam finds it's way into my inbox.

@firefly,
And yet, I have to apply no filters to my Yahoo mail as those particular spam messages (drug ads, penis enlargement ads) NEVER arrive on my Yahoo email. Is it somehow possible that Yahoo may make it inhospitable for those spammers to come there? Or am I just lucky on Yahoo and unlucky on gmail?

@Ragman,
It might be because you give out your gmail address when you sign up for pornography.

Except for the fact that I never did that.

@tsarstepan,
Here's my point about Gmail issues, as convoluted as the message became. They allow and profit from spam:

"Google to Pay US $500m Settlement:
Google Inc. admitted it helped online Canadian pharmacies sell prescription drugs illegally. "

@Ragman,
No. That story has nothing to do with spam.

There is a difference between advertisement (i.e. what you see on the bottom of this message right now) and spam.

The issue behind this settlement was adwords where Google pays websites, including Able2Know, on their pages. Most of these ads are legitimate. The US drug companies were upset because Google was putting ads for illegal sale of their product that hurt their business.

But no. These ads are the legitimate way that sites like Able2know get paid for the work they do. They are not the same thing as spam.
