Hey, soz, I have something for you and Occom Bill. A movie recommendation. I'll post it one its own thread.
Kinda cool reasoning in action...
She asked me what grades make up middle school. Then she stopped me before I'd gotten started and mused aloud -- "OK, 12 grades plus kindergarten and preschool, that's 14, divided by 2 is 7, so 7th grade is in middle school, right?"
Good god, she's brilliant. What grade is she in?

Brilliant reasoning, got the order of magnitude right, finished with a subtle mistake in the arithmetic. That's three reasons to think she's well on her way to becoming a physicist. (I predict she will easily find the mistake, possibly with a little nudge from you, and be embarrassed when she does.)
Preschool and kindergarten not being grades, you mean? We did talk about that, yeah. Otherwise not sure what you mean? (I make no claims to mathematical brilliance, myself.)
She's about to finish kindergarten, mac. SOOOO excited about first grade.
Oh that reminds me. We're going to get our class assignments in a couple of weeks -- who her teacher will be next year, and her classmates. There was an open house at school and two of the moms and I were talking about how we REALLY but REALLY wanted to know NOW and it's hard to wait. E.G. was chatting up the teacher. Only us three families were left. The teacher let slip that a) those three girls will be together next year, and b) who the teacher will be. (YES!) The teacher is one that sozlet was hoping for, she took an after school class with her and really liked her. But it was all top secret.
So sozlet told me that, at a recent school-wide activity, she whispered to the first grade teacher, "I'm so excited that you'll be my teacher next year!" and the teacher responded in kind. (We saw her a bit ago -- before any of this happened -- and she said "Hi, [sozlet]!" with a big smile and lots of enthusiasm, so I kind of expected this.)
It's not written in stone, there is evidently some last-minute horse-trading amongst the teachers to get a good balance for each class. But it's cool that sozlet's so excited about it, and that she'll get to be with at least two good friends (we don't know anything beyond that yet).
That's a very smart little girl you've got there, kid. She's fortunate to have parents who give her encouraging and honest answers to things.
12 + 2 = 14/2 doesn't equal 7? Don't tell me I have to go back and start over again. (Math never was my best subject.)
Uhhh, 7 + 2 = 9....
Additionally, 2 + 5 = 7
(I used to cry in frustration doing my grading and drainage homework; I was 42 at the time. Then I got the whole thing and had no further trouble. But I remember the misery.)

Close, but not really. She can count grades however she feels like, so I have no problem with her counting kindergarten and preschool as grades. In fact, I think it adds to her coolness factor that she thought outside the box like that. But having started this way, she then got inconsequent about it. Under her assumptions, the seventh grade in her calculation is the fifth grade in school, the first grade of her calculation being kindergarten, the second preschool, and the third the first grade in school, and so forth.
But that's peanuts. Her approach itself was super-cool.
Aha! The math is right. It's the grades that are wrong. Thanks, Thomas.
That's right. The grown-ups on the school board got their math wrong, and Sozlet got lost in their misnumbering of the grades.
Kid came up with a puzzle. Can you guess what this is? (I didn't, but then I've been particularly thick lately...)
A lying 'L' made out of 'E's?
No idea... (though I get the L)
Oh, and by the way, Sozlet has great hand eye coordination..
Brownies in Columbus, Ohio must look different than in the American places I have been so far.
Oh! Now that I get it, I love it. Very clever!
