@GracieGirl,
South Park is a parody, but like any good parody it is based on truth. Mel Gibson based his movies on Passion Plays which often blamed Jews for murdering Jesus and which several times in history incited deadly persecution of Jewish people.

Quote:
Many passion plays historically blamed the Jews for the death of Jesus in a polemical fashion, depicting a crowd of Jewish people condemning Jesus to crucifixion and a Jewish leader assuming eternal collective guilt for the crowd for the murder of Jesus, which, The Boston Globe explains, "for centuries prompted vicious attacks — or pogroms — on Europe's Jewish communities". Time magazine in its article, The Problem With Passion, explains that "such passages (are) highly subject to interpretation".

@GracieGirl,
South Park is very intelligent satire and it is brutally funny.

This episode is a good one.

@GracieGirl,
The parody is pointing out, through humor, that theres something wrong with Mel Gibson. That is what absurdist comedy can do.

@maxdancona,
Oh! Well, I still think its mean and doesnt Jesus say forgive? Killing Jews for making a mistake doesnt seem very Jesus-like. Jesus forgave them so the Christians should too. Im sure God doesnt want any killers in heaven.

I'll watch the episode, but I dont think it'll be funny. We'll see. Stick around, please, I'll tell ya what I thought. Unless you dont care, which you probably dont, huh? HaHa! Oh well, I'll tell ya anyway. Wink Razz Razz

You are completely missing the point GracieGirl. Saying that the Jews killed Jesus is racist (particularly since even in the Bible it was the Romans that did the killing).

Not to mention that if you believe the Bible, Jesus was a Jew.

@maxdancona,

@GracieGirl,
Jewish is a race with the warning that the term "race" is a difficult one that has many reasons. Being Jewish involves much more than religion or ancestry. It involves culture and ethnicity.

It sounds like you haven't read the Bible much. That Jesus was Jewish is a key theme in the Christian Bible.

It was very important to the writers of the Gospels (i.e. the first four books of the New Testament) that Jesus was portrayed as following the Jewish religion. They all had Jesus speaking about following the law of Moses (i.e. the founder of the Jewish religion system) several times.

In two of the Gospels, the genealogy is carefully detailed to claim that he was descended from King David (and important ruler of ancient Israel).

Yes, Jewish is a race. In fact, I know people who are Jewish Atheists.

And yes, in the Christian Bible that Jesus was supposed to be Jewish.

@maxdancona,
True, dat. In fact, in the very early days of the so-called Christian faith, Christianity was considered by most to be just another Jewish sect. It wasn't until Saul of Tarsus (aka Saint Paul) started preaching to the Gentiles (non-Jews) that the religion began to spread beyond Judea into the rest of the Roman Empire.

This is true and it is why christianity should really be called Paulism since it was from his writings that people got a perspective of jesus which probably is not historically accurate. Paul was the one that felt jesus was divine and imposed his belief through his letters which formed some of the new testament. Paul never knew jesus or anyone who knew jesus, he just had this ideology of what jesus was and it became a religion.

@Krumple,
Krumple, You are making stuff up.

In Paul's writings he talks about meeting with the Apostles. The book of Luke (not written by Paul) also documents Paul meeting the Apostles. It is possible that this record is false, but I don't think you have any evidence of this. For you to categorically state that Paul never met people who knew Jesus is unfounded.

@maxdancona,
And, for the record, the Apostle Paul was also Jewish.

@GracieGirl,
If you're interested in being a Christian, I'd suggest you read the bible...particularly the New Testament. It's always better to read the source for yourself than to rely on what others tell you it says.

Once you've figured out what you believe (mostly), if you're interested in finding a church, you should visit several. You'll probably never find one you agree with 100%, because everyone's faith is a little different. But you can find one that's close enough that you'll fit in.

But start by reading the bible for yourself.

@GracieGirl,
I was a strongly believing Christian in my youth. I even worked to become a minister. That was long ago but I still know the Bible very well and the way that modern American Protestants interpret it.

When I got older it stopped making sense to me.

I agree with Eva. I would suggest that you look at several different types of Church before you jump in.

Have you also considered looking at the other religions?

@maxdancona,
So, your atheist too?

I don't know anything about other religions.

I wanna be a Christian because I don't want to go to hell. I don't know if hell is real but I wanna be a Christian just in case.

But I guess I do want to know more either way. I don't know. Religion is confusing.

@Eva,
Thanks Eva!

I'll read a friends bible. And I have to find a way to get to church. I don't think my dad would be ok with the idea. He is really antiChristian even though he says he's openminded.

Thanks guys! I gotta get ready for school 2morrow and my curfew is soon. You can keep posting on the thread but I'm might not respond until 2morrow after school or during lunch or class.

GOODNIGHT! Smile

I saw it a few years ago, and thought it was mainly violence porn. I'm not into violence porn, so I didn't like it at all.

GracieGirl wrote:
Hey! The movie comes right from the bible right? Or is it just bits and pieces?

It is loosely based on the Passion story in the Bible, with the gory parts greatly amplified and others greatly attenuated. I don't think that watching the movie gives you an accurate impression of the Bible.

Yes. When you see pictures of the crucifixion, you may find that the cross has a sign saying "INRI" posted on it. That stands for "Iesus Nazarenum, Rex Iudeorum", which is Latin for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". The requirement that Christians be Jews was waived only decades after Jesus's death, when Christians began to convert Roman gentiles.

Since you don't know anything about other religions, let me assure you that plenty of religions threaten you with hell or similar unpleasantries if you don't believe their way. If you become a Christian to avoid the Christian hell, you are not only betting that the creator of the Universe, who allegedly sees everything, won't see through such opportunistic pandering. You're also just as likely to end up in some other religion's hell if that religion is right and Christianity is wrong. Out of the frying pan, into the fire. You might as well pick whatever religion makes sense to you, if any.

In that case, I agree with Eva: Read the Bible and make up your own mind about it.
