What do you do when you can't sleep?

I feel really tired bug I can't sleep and I don't know why. I've tried watching tv and reading but that just wakes me up more. Ive tried doing math in my head and I tried listening to music and walking around my room until I get sleepier. It's not working. What do I do when I can't sleep?

I generally don't have any trouble sleeping, unless I get woken up 5am, or so.

Try making your mind a blank, and focus on your breathing in and out. In and out, etc.

Might work.

I turn on the TV, find a cable channel with something extremely boring...like old black & white movies or fishing programs or something else I don't like...and turn the sound down very, very low. Before long, I get tired of trying to hear what's going on, and I'm not interested anyway, so it becomes "white noise" that puts me right to sleep.

Hello Community,

There are a many possible causes for waking up in the middle of the night and being unable to fall back to sleep. It could be physical such as muscle aches, muscles tension, need to go to the bathroom, you left the TV on, your partner is snoring, the dog is snoring, you had too much caffeine or alcohol today, and on and on. For these we can usually figure out the solution:
* do some light stretches for muscle aches
* take some aspirin/Tylenol/Advil/etc if pain is keeping you awake
* move to a different bed
* turn off the TV
* get up and do something until you’re tired enough to fall back asleep
