5.25" floppy..
Your laptop wouldn't be able to connect to a floppy drive to run it.

If your computer has a modem or serial port then you might be able to connect to another computer. Whether they could actually talk to each other is a totally different issue. I'm not sure if current laptops can set set their modem speed slow enough.

As has been already stated here. Your laptop would be considered a super computer .

In 1990, the fastest super computer could do 23.2 GFLOPS
A 2010 6 core Intel i7 processor does 109 GFlops

@parados,
I think you could take along a usb to rs232 adopter and parallel port and you can order a 3.5 floppy drive that work by way of another usb adopter because I happen to have one however I am not sure you could get an off the shelf usb/5.25 drive if for no other reason the power requirement could not be met by a usb device without a separate power supply.

@parados,
One other comment anyone who knew computers living in the 1980s that got a good look at your computer would know you are a time travel and off hand I would bet that they would assume you was coming back from many more decades into the future then 2011.

@parados,
Forget laptops- a REGULAR COMPUTER from 2011.

People still use floppy disks.

@JGoldman10,
If your wireless device had traveled through time, it would have done so at a fantastic velocity. According to the principles of time dilation and experiments with a muon's rate of decay in a particle accelerator, you would not need to purchase the extended warranty

Almost no desktop now being sold in 2011 have a 3.5 drive install let alone a 5/14 drive install as a matter of course.

@BillRM,
Forget laptops- what if I took a PC from 2011 back to the '80s. Could I use floopy disks in the '80s?

You would need to specially install a 5 1/4 drive not used an off the shelf computer and even then I am not sure if the bio of such a modern computer would see a 5 /12 drive directly. You would need to try it out first to be sure one way or another

A USB to 5 1/2 drive adopter would most likely be a better solution even for a desktop however one way or another you could get a 2011 computer to see and read such a drive.

a 1.44 disk is a 3.5" floppy, not a 5.25"

@parados,
You are right and I then did a long google search and could not come up with a 5 1/4 usb drive even if there was plenty of cheap usb 3.5 dives for sale.

3.5 drives started to come into being in 1982 or so meaning if the time traveler had access to a computer of the time period with both types of drives and a modern computer with a 3.5 drive and a rs232 interface he still would be in good shape as far as getting information in and out of his modern computer and 1980s computers.

If I was doing such time traveling I think I would have a computer with usb rs232/parallel interface, usb phone modem, usb 3.5 drive.

Plenty of emulators software for older OSs and I might set up my computer to have a duel boot system if at all possible with one booting into windows 98 assuming I could get the drivers to work with the hardware.

Here's a laptop from the early 80's--it's got 5 1/2"floppies too. You could also use an offline cassette deck for memory storage.

The question should have been, "If I was going back in time to the '80s what modern day computer should I take with me?"
