Apparent hack of Fox News Twitter feed says Obama dead
By the CNN Wire Staff
July 4, 2011 -- Updated 1217 GMT (2017 HKT) |
(CNN) -- Hackers apparently broke into the FoxNews.com's Twitter feed for political news early Monday and used it to announce -- falsely -- that President Barack Obama had been assassinated.
Obama was "shot twice at a Ross' restaurant in Iowa while campaigning. RIP Obama, best regards to the Obama family," read one of several Twitter messages posted on @FoxNewsPolitics early Monday.

@Walter Hinteler,
Things like this are usually the result of a disgruntled employee or someone recently fired or let go.

Hey, wasn't Friday Glenn Beck's last day at FOX?

@Walter Hinteler,
Agh.
I'd much prefer it if the hackers had posted something clever, witty or amusing instead.
Stuff like this gives me the creeps.
I worry that it might put the idea into some maniac's brain .... or reinforce some deranged person's fantasy of their their big moment in the spotlight.

The Secret Service is stepping in to investigate the recent hacking of Fox News’ political twitter account after messages were posted
claiming President Obama had been assassinated.

FoxNews.com alerted the Secret Service to the hacking on Monday and the agency, tasked with protecting the President, is examining
the tweets and will conduct the appropriate follow up.

The Fox account was hacked early Monday morning and six tweets were posted reporting that the President had been shot and killed
in Iowa. In reality, the President was in Washington yesterday celebrating the Fourth of July at the White House with military families.

Fox later called the messages, which went out to the 34,000 followers of its political twitter account, “false” and “malicious” and said
it “regrets any distress” the tweets may have caused.

Fox is also working with Twitter to address the situation. "We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this
occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts," Vice President and General Manager of
Fox News Digital Jeff Misenti said in a written statement.

@djjd62,
Spot on! People take too many political jokes seriously. The potential for a presidential assassination is always present; that's the reason why the president is always under protective cover of security service personnel.

Any fool that attempts an assassination on any president is always is danger of getting killed; the prospect is not that easy. There's no way to control deranged people; they will always exist in this world.

@cicerone imposter,
I'm conflicted re this sort of hack....and I love dark political satire.

However, I have to come down ethically on hacking being wrong, and much as assassinating Obama reflects legitimate satire on the Evil of Fox and its vicious and deeply immoral wet dreams, I think such material being broadcast even on the existential nadir of a real news source is deeply disturbing.

I am sad, but I have to condemn it.

I'd love to see Roberts take on this though.
