I recall Soul train being somewhat of an African-American version of American Bandstand. I vaguely remember AB - the only thing I recall about both shows was that they both had a scramble board and some random contestant would unscramble the letters on the board to spell out the name of some pop music star or some song I think that was popular back in the 80s. AB had Dick Clark as the host and ST had Don Cornelius.
I am curious - which show was more popular?
@JGoldman10,
I would say American Bandstand, at least from a longevity and influential point of view.
Quote:American Bandstand is an American musical variety show that aired in various versions from 1952 to 1989, hosted from 1957 until its final season by Dick Clark, who also served as producer. The show featured teenagers dancing to Top 40-type music introduced by Clark; at least one popular musical act—over the decades, running the gamut from Jerry Lee Lewis to Run DMC—would usually appear in-person to lip-sync one of their latest singles. Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon holds the record for most appearances at 110.
The show's popularity helped Dick Clark become an American media mogul and inspired other similar long-running music programs, such as Soul Train and Top of the Pops.

Quote:Soul Train was an American musical variety show that aired in syndication from October 1971 to March 2006. In its 35-year history, the show primarily featured performances by R&B, soul, and hip hop artists, although funk, jazz, disco, and gospel artists have also appeared.
As a nod to Soul Train's longevity, the show's opening sequence (during later seasons) contains a claim that it was the "longest-running, first-run, nationally syndicated program in television history," with over 1,100 episodes produced from the show's debut through the 2005-06 season.

But, in all fairness, they are different types of shows, aiming at different audiences.
i preferred Don Kirshner's Rock Concert myself

and the early musical performances on the first few years of Saturday Night Live
@djjd62,
Your link isn't working very well. Try this one:

Yes I would say AB too. AB was on for 47 years, and ST was on fro 25.
I think Dick Clark has more notoriety- people call him the "World's Oldest Teenager".
@JGoldman10,
According to me most popular show is Grand Alcahla in Middle london. Thats very popular
