When his life was ruined, his family killed, his farm destroyed, Job knelt down on the ground and yelled up to the heavens, "Why god? Why me?" and the thundering voice of God answered, "There's just something about you that pisses me off".

... is it always necessary for one generation to wade through oceans of blood and heap up mountains of human sacrifice that the next generation may learn a grain of truth from it all?

@George,
Quote:
"Walk more slowly, white men," she said, projecting her hideous, shrivelled countenance between the grass curtains, and fixing her gleaming eyes upon us. "Why will ye run to meet the evil that shall befall you, ye seekers after treasure?" and she laughed that horrible laugh which always sent a cold shiver down my back, and for a while quite took the enthusiasm out of us.

Sir Henry Rider Haggard KBE. King Solomon's Mines. Chapter 16 The Place of Death.

The book is the mine and Sir Henry is Solomon.

An unrecognised masterpiece of English Literature thanks to the machinations of the PC Brigade.

@spendius,
Take care sweet girl, no-one knows and no-one understands.
Skimmed milk, and worse, they drink, cut-glass they're clutching in their hands.
Diamonds in my hand, diamonds in my hand, right here,
Take them love, they're your's to keep,
Broken pots in ancient tombs spill them out
And angels reappear.

Cynical spendi wrote that not long after reading KSM as an adult. It's a bit of a joke on Cleland's "estimable jewels".

There's nothing going on in a creative act outside of the study or studio in which it appears on what was a blank space previously.

The composer of a train timetable is promoting a particular constellation of values.

@spendius,
One might easily see the success with which timetable composers have promoted a particular constellation of values by the rage exhibited by passengers when there is a delay. The rage is very low key at the 2 minute mark mind you, only the most impatient doing a bit of eye-rolling, but it gradually builds up as the time that flies flies by.
