But look how it sells. I just said that the truth is what sells.

And nobody else could have painted a weeping woman like he did.

The representation of nature, or life, had been blown up as art by science. It was okay for greetings cards or pretty portraits of the Ford franchise owner and his wife. But that's not art. He dropped that at 17.

I don't see how you can talk about Picasso like that.

What about like this?

Picasso

Picasso
you give us things
which
bulge:grunting lungs pumped full of sharp thick mind

you make us shrill
presents always
shut in the sumptuous screech of
simplicity

(out of the
black unbunged
Something gushes vaguely a squeak of planes
or

between squeals of
Nothing grabbed with circular shrieking tightness
solid screams whispers.)
Lumberman of the Distinct

your brain’s
axe only chops hugest inherent
Trees of Ego,from
whose living and biggest

bodies lopped
of every
prettiness

you hew form truly

e. e. cummings.

Because I have seen this quote attributed to Mark Twain, I googled it.

From googling around, I found these three variations. One came from the Bible but I couldn’t find any credible source for the other two.

Don’t argue with idiots because they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience. —Greg King
Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference. —Mark Twain
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. —Proverbs 26:4 (King James version)
As you can see, only the last one is easily verifiable.

Cummings is a favorite of mine too. I have a book or two of his stuff in my collection. Haven't visited his work lately.

@spendius,
I consider that Picasso was talented, but that's as far as I can take it.

@edgarblythe,
Okay.

"Today intellectuals have bogies much more frightening than fundamentalism in schools, . . ."

Prof. Richard Hofstadter. 1962.

Although I'm not sure how the Prof, defined "intellectual". I think he must have expected us to know what he meant.
