Then why do you run like a frightened gazelle whenever you run into things that challenge you mentally, Merry?

@edgarblythe,
Unless there's a greater context involved in those thoughts, I'd have to say that the Buddha missed it on this one, Edgar.

@JTT,
Every quote here can have qualifying exceptions. Generally, I agree with this one.

The Buddha obviously didn't consider industrial pollution, Ed. People are responsible for contracting cancer, flu, colds, ... ? Children are responsible for congenital defects, ... ?

@JTT,
In a sense we are responsible, in that we let them get away with it. Even once we educate ourselves to the danger of a bad environment and food supply, we continue to make bad choices for ourselves. And, once we are sick, most of us put our lives in the hands of profit driven concerns, which is a crap shoot.

"There is a profound difference between apologizing for
your bad behavior and apologizing for how that
behavior affects others. Saying 'I'm sorry for the shi**y
thing I did to you' is a lot more honest and brave than
saying only 'I'm sorry that you feel bad.'" ~Carroll

Certainly we are, in a sense, Ed. But not in that sweeping sense that the quote of Buddha portrayed.

@JTT,
That's a matter of opinion. Just as we allow disinformation in government and other aspects of our lives, we allow it re health and medicine. We owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to seek out that course which best benefits us and actually act on it. Who is to blame if we fail to make the effort?

Clearly, it isn't. The Buddha was mistaken [with the caveat I offered earlier] with his wide sweeping quote. Is the Buddha a he? Smile

Quote:

Beyond some limited actions that really is a recipe for disaster.

Quote:
Who is to blame if we fail to make the effort?

Who is to blame when 'we' royally **** up and bury those loved ones who we had nowhere near the skills or knowledge to treat?

@JTT,
I am not suggesting we become doctors. Just that we take true responsibility for ourselves. If I had not done it I would likely have died ten or fifteen years ago.
