What do you think of this quote?
Say you do an action X in defiance of somebody named P. You were wrong in doing X, according to the rules set forth by P. Later on, P does something, Y, against you. P was wrong in doing Y, according to the rules set forth by you. The interesting part here is that YOU DON'T KNOW whether or not P purposefully meant to perform Y, against your wishes. Does finding out the answer to this mystery really matter, now that you're both even? Should you retaliate further against P? After all, P may not even have meant to do Y against you. What do you think?
In general, is being even with another person more important than knowing why an event occurs?
@browser32,
X,Y,P, & Z. I wouldn't try to follow that on a bet.
@roger,
aw, good old Mr. Mxyzptlk
just say his name backwards, Kltpzyxm, and he will return to the 5th dimension
Sounds like a relationships question to me, just dishonestly framed.
@browser32,
HOW did P. and u get jurisdiction to enact rules ??
David
@OmSigDAVID,
Now we gotta contend with 'u'? I'm outta here
@roger,
I think the subject here is the XYZ Affair. Lemme Google that.

Does "being even" have any value to anyone over the age of 10?

O, O, O, no! I o u a life of loyalty, R.
@OmSigDAVID,
I'm gonna write one of those things someday, and identify all the actors as a, e, i,o, and u. I might toss in W & Y sometimes.

No.
Quote:Should you retaliate further against P?
No.
Quote: After all, P may not even have meant to do Y against you.
Indeed.
Your sense of what "even" means and P's sense of what it means are not going to coincide, because you two are going to differ in assessing the severity of the wrongs done to one another. Your sense of justice is subjective, and so is P's.
When individuals try to pay one another back, you never really get "an eye for an eye." What you get instead is an eye for an eye lash, and an enemy who will want two eyes from you for the one you took from him. When both players try to level the score according to their own systems of judging who's ahead, you get an escalating cycle of violence that drowns you both in alphabet soup.
