@Setanta,
If, for example, we were to so poison the air and water that we could not survive, the planet would have cleaned up after us in a few decades, never mind centuries

Where did you get this from?

or did you mean the planet would have wiped us out and then possibly clean up after itself, considering it is still there. lol. for one, ozone destroyed cannot be replenished "on its own"

@samanthac,
Ozone depletion is only a problem from the perspective of creatures such as humans, who are not evolved to deal with it. You're equating "destroyed" with conditions not favorable to humans. So what if conditions are not favorable to humans? Do you have some goofy notion that this planet was "created" for us?

By the way, you're full of **** about ozone. Ozone is created in the atmosphere through coronal discharge (lightening). That would not self-correct in decades, but that's only a problem for humans and photic zone plankton. Once again, what's bad for humans ain't necessarily bad forthe planet.

Likely because they have a vacant look in their eyes and make vacuous comments. And these are his friends.

@samanthac,
Humans are not the only species which thinks. Primates have basic problem-solving abilities, and that requires "thinking" on some level.

@existential potential,
"on some level". Good. I even think that we should broaden the term to include the greatest variety of "cognitive" behavior in all species.

@samanthac,

To sidetrack, I think that our ability to think has got the better of ourselves. The point where we started to depart from our individual business to develop relationships, language and thoughts gives rise to more problems. trying to come up with solutions always end up with more problems.

Your sterling efforts to redress the imbalance have not gone unnoticed.

@OmSigDAVID,
Even a flea has to "think" same as the flea on a the fleas back has to scratch the flea on it's back.

@samanthac,
The fact that we are able to think, should we be worried?

@samanthac,
we as a species may think we are a superior lot, but when I look at global events, I think not!

@ butty,

By the use of tools and competent logic
in their application, we have risen to the top of the food chain.
That shoud count for something.
