The results of the new studies were announced today (June 14) at the annual meeting of the solar physics division of the American Astronomical Society, which is being held this week at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

"The solar cycle may be going into a hiatus," Frank Hill, associate director of the National Solar Observatory's Solar Synoptic Network, said in a news briefing today (June 14).

Possible second little ice age (LIA-II) on the horizen, basically God's plan to make democrats and Gaea-worshippers look stupid...

What may be the science story of the century is breaking this evening, as heavyweight US solar physicists announce that the Sun appears to be headed into a lengthy spell of low activity, which could mean that the Earth – far from facing a global warming problem – is actually headed into a mini Ice Age......

@gungasnake,
The problems with all " climtic prediction" is that it gets quickly politicized by the "true believers". Note gungas glee at the possibility of another minimum.

@farmerman,
Not sure there's anything to be gleeful about, also no real idea as to which between a second LIA and the Gaea-worshipers and warmers policies would do more harm to the world.

@gungasnake,
All politics aside, solar activity cycles are interesting.

@rosborne979,
yep, the sun is an interesting engine that, based upon its wobblies, precessions, sunspots and flares (We just had a huge one last week). We are at the edge of a rope all the time.

If we had a solar flare set like the three or so weve had recently, during the time that the earths magnetic field intensity is decreasing during its "Flip cycle" we can lose some atmosphere.

@farmerman,
Many years ago during an A2K discussion with Satt_fs I discovered that the basic 7-year solar cycle is due to the sun passing back and forth through the barycenter of the solar system.

As it turns out, this was a known fact long before it came up in our discussion, but it was very fun arriving at the same conclusions from searching information on the Internet, rather than simply having someone tell us. We actually deduced this from our questions to each other, and after coming to our own conclusions we were then able to search out relevant information to confirm our ideas.

At least when the glaciers return I won't have to mow my yard any more. Life will be easier.

What causes solar activity like this to go into minimums? Is there a cycle to it? What is the period of the cycle?
