When I was in Paris last year, I got some very cool old postcards in the (old) Paris Opera gift shop. Circa 1900, postage stamps affixed, beautifully handwritten to friends and family long gone by now, I imagine. They cost me the equivalent of about 50 cents apiece. I bought six of them.
Funny thing is, they had all this brand new tourist crap there that everyone was fawning over (and paying huge prices for), and I was the only one oohing & aahing over the shoebox in the corner full of old postcards. I have two of them framed now. They are hand-colored night scenes of the Paris Opera with carriages full of ladies & gentlemen in formal dress. Absolutely beautiful.
Oh, phooey, the image didn't show.
I'll upload it here. (Tried to link from Yahoo photos.)
Eva, that is just the kind of thing I love. Old shoeboxes in used book stores and thrift shops sometimes have neat ones like that too.

Here's the postcard (almost forgot I uploaded it):
what was the answer on this?
was it in a Bond movie?
geesh I thought that was 3 pictures - I meant the lower right picture
Nobody has correctly answered the where the pictures were taken. Still waiting.....
There's some interesting stuff behind one of the pictures.
I think the one picture is an Island???
Not an island. All three pictures were taken in the same city.
Sozobe, cool picture!
And all this talk of garden walls and thoughts, and old scenes, would anyone like some Monet cards?
I go to museum and gallery shops for most of my cards.
And are the pics of Dublin, c.i...?
L
Not Dublin. You guys give up?
those streetcars have to mean something
must mull
It's tougher than I thought.
c.i. : i am not sure were the pix are from; the approach of the bridge reminds me somewhat of lisbon/portugal crosing the river ... ?. also the lower right pix(castle ?) reminds me of lisbon. anyone at least getting "warm" ? c.i. : you want to give us a hint ? hbg
Yeah, i go along with Hamburger, the bridge struck me . . . i think he's right about Lisbon. I've not seen it, but i've seen pictures--just never paid much attention.
Yes, it's Lisbon. The tower is called Belem Tower. Here's a link for some info.
http://www.azureva.com/gb/portugal/magazine/belem.php3 Lisbon is also interesting because of Vasco de Gama. He's interred at Jeronimo Cathedral, and we saw his tomb. Anybody remember the history of de Gama? It's quite interesting.
BTW, when we departed Lisbon, we crossed over that bridge.
Here's a pretty tough one.
c.i. : some nice pix can also be found under >>>
www.travel-images.com/lisbon.html . i also found a similar looking streetcar under "portugal+lisbon+streetcar" - it still amazes me that one can almost find anything in "google" by a bit of refined searching. we left lisbon on the m.s. rotterdam, so we sailed "under" the bridge - i remember that it was quite a thrill to see the ship's mast clear under the bridge with not much room to spare and i took a pix of it. the 1st mate told us over dinner that night, that "scratching" a bridge would be cause for instant dismissal of the ship's captain. even though a pilot might be guiding the ship, it is - so i learned - the captain's ultimate responsibility to handle the ship safely. hbg
