A $500 CHECK ISSUED BY THE STATE OF OHIO WAS STOLEN FROM THE MAILBOX, ENDORSED USING MY NAME (BUT NOT BY ME) AND CASHED AT A MOM & POP CORNER GROCERY STORE DOWN THE STREET FROM MY HOUSE. THE STORE IS BEING UNCOOPERATIVE (WON'T DO ANYTHING, INCLUDING GIVE ANY INFORMATION THAT THEY MAY HAVE) AND I NEED THIS MONEY TO PAY MY RENT! WHAT CAN I DO (while I appreciate all responses, please don't speculate...for instance, if you KNOW that I can go after the store for not knowing their endorser or that Ohio will write me a new check if I file some kind of form, that would be a great answer. Thx.)
Go to the police. This is fraud.
@Ceili,
Call the police and then call the bank that issued the check and have them either cancel the check or investigate whomever cashed it as well.
Call the State and tell them your story.
Call the local police and tell them, too.
The store owner can't give you any recourse. He can cash any check he wants to, with or without ID - it's his rules on that.
Some stores have cameras which may have recorded who cashed that check.
IF you have a police report, a charity may be able to help you pay your rent.
@PUNKEY,
Definitely get the cops involved. You might also consider contacting the local press -- on the local news, there's usually a crusading consumer reporter. The store owner, I am willing to bet, does not want this being publicized.
