Soooo beautiful.

Had 7 fast moving buffalo appear out of nowhere, and if we hadn't braked, they would have gladly pushed us off the road. They trotted within a couple feet of the vehicle, with barely a glance at us.

Why?

To get to the other side of course.

A few years ago,
we were going out on the Arizona desert at dawn,
to go up in a hot air balloon, and saw 3 hairy wild pigs
running in column formation
(but we did not take them up in the balloons with us).

The pilot was skimming the desert floor,
about 6 inches up, but we did not run over the pigs.

There r a lot of holes, animal abodes, in the desert floor.

@chai2,
When Teddy Roosevelt was a rancher in the Dakota, Territory (his ranch was in what is now North Dakota), he hunted down some saddle tramps who has stolen his river boat (he used it on the Little Missouri). He hunted them into what is now South Dakota, and escorted them to Dickinson, Dakota Territory (southwestern North Dakota). With his reputation as a "tough hombre" increasing, he joined forces with Seth Bullock of Deadwood (now South Dakota) to hunt down horse theives. He and Bullock remained friends for life.

You are in the company of giants, which is where you belong.

I guess i didn't mention that Bullock was the Sheriff of Deadwood. The day after he arrived in Deadwood, "Wild Bill" Hickok was shot dead. Bullock had been a sheriff in Montana, where he famously held off a lynch mob with a shotgun, so that the condemned could be properly hanged with all the forms of the law. The man hired as executioner ran off, so Bullock sent Watson (the condemned) to eternity himself. He had no objection to the son-of-a-bitch being hung, he just wanted it done according to law.

Based on his reputation, after Hickok was shot, the townspeople of Deadwood asked him to be their sheriff.

He was shot because his friends were kidding around.

Chai, sometime ago I read a really good book about the Lakota (Dull knifes of Pine Ridge) which, I think, is all about what is now South Dakota, and recounts the history of that tribe over many generations.
If you see it in a bookshop there, it'll make a great holiday read.

Still waiting for chai to return & tell us more ...

This thread title reminded me of this music from Calamity Jane, watched on B&W TV when I was a little kid.

I suspect that if Miss Chai is travelling in South Dakota, we won't be hearing from her very often.

David, for speakers of this language from other countries, holiday means the same as vacation does to us. OG is saying it would make a good beach book.

Well, prairie book anyway.

I love reading up on the history of a place when I'm actually there.

My best so far was "Malta Convoy" and "The Capillan of Malta" while I was away once. No guesses as to where I went.

Did I read somewhere that they found a good deposit of gold in that area? And that the find was on land designated as Lakota sacred land?

Rings a bell. If so, whatever happened next? Who took the lions share of the windfall, if in fact the mining was allowed to get up and running?

I lived in Rapid City, South Dakota for awhile a long, long time ago. There was still lots of condemned properties due to the flood they had. I did go see Mt. Rushmore, which was amazing. I think I lived there maybe three or four months. Seeing buffalo is a pretty common occurrence there if I remember correctly. They are amazing looking animals.
