Large Naval Painting; Any information at all (Pictures included)

This has been on the wall at a family members for as long as I can remember. I'd love to know anything at all about it.

The varnish is cracked and it's a bit blackened with age so I'd like to know if it's worth looking into restoring professionally. I don't think it's a particularly great painting or anything - but as it looks to be at least a couple of centuries old would love to know something!

Many thanks.

@AngloAmerican19,
To post pictures on this forum you have to click on "Img" on the BBCode editor, right-click on the picture, then choose "View Image Info". Your 1st link:

P.S. sorry, this format isn't suitable for the page size - some picture editing will be needed..... Don't have a pic editor right now (on slow connection) but somebody else is sure to show up and help you with posting it in a smaller format. Nice pic, btw - do you know if there's a signature anywhere on it?

@High Seas,
I did initially use the img tags but the preview revealed them to be far too big. I thought this a more practical method but if I need to resize then I will.

As for the signature, it's possible there's one in the lower left hand corner but by no means certain. I've heard it was at one time above a fireplace and smoke over the years would help explain the blackness I guess.

Edit: Also the dimensions are 44" by 30".

@AngloAmerican19,
That would be a good idea, re-sizing the pics so they fit on the page - we have a few art experts here and it would make it easier for them to view the picture.

How large is it? If you're in the US you could take to an Antiques Roadshow event this summer.

@High Seas,
It's easy enough to see by clicking on the links, but I guess some people don't like to click on them.

I take it as a scene of Istanbul along the Bosporus, but I'm pretty ignorant about the possibilities otherwise, re the location, and the painter. Will be interested if anyone here can help on this.

@High Seas,
It won't let me edit the original post but here are the resized images. If someone could put them in the initial post (but leave the full sized links) that would be great.

Also I'm in the UK but we have antiques roadshow here as well. It's definitely worth considering, like I said I know we don't have a masterpiece or anything here but I'm studying history and am basically fascinated to learn whatever possible!

Dimensions are 44" across and 30" length.

@AngloAmerican19,
The only one who can edit your initial post is you, and there's a time limit on that.
But - people can see there is more than the initial post in the thread.

@AngloAmerican19,
The pics are fine as posted - don't worry about editing the original post, the page hasn't turned yet so anyone interested can see them right away. Good luck!

It looks to me as though it might be Venice. Other than that, i have no help for you.
