That's a good question; I take from a few sources regarding time, particular;y because it is such a huge philosophical question. From a physics I look to Einstein, or any current discoveries on time in the physics community. From phenomenology and metaphysics I have found some very insightful writings from Quentin Smith and, of course, Heidegger.
So to answer the question, I would have to say a couple of things; what is fundamental in our understanding of time is twofold. 1) We have to ask ourselves what it means to be 'in time', which brings up ontology, and 2) what impact does it have on knowing the world, which brings up epistemology. With 1) the notion of temporality is also brought up (in fact it might very well be more important than time in regards to ontology).
