What was the deal with Scrooge McDuck and his money bin?

If Scrooge was so smart, why didn't he keep his money in an underground vault, so the Beagle Boys wouldn't keep trying to steal his money?

Looks like a fairly secure doorway, but remember, if the Beagle Boys had NO chance of stealing the 90FT deep vault of gold, there would be no PLOT.

Did they ever go into what the Beagle Boys were planning on doing with Scrooge's lucre after they stole it?
