They've been playing this about every hour on the CBC. I didn't know much about her - other than this song - til they did a radio piece on her tonight. Amazing voice, but it seems she was an extraordinary mother before she was anything else.
Apparently she referred to herself as a shlump from New Jersey. Gotta love that.
She is one of my all time favorite singers. She's been ill for a very long time and I'll miss her, but am relieved that she is no longer suffering.
She gave up most of her rising career when her severely brain-damaged daughter was born and she decided to not institutionalize her and provided all of her care at home. After her daughter died in her 30's Phoebe was making a successful comeback with new songs and an even stronger voice. Last year she suffered a stroke and has been in and out of hospitals since.
I love all her commercially successful songs, but some of my favorites never made it high up on the charts.
